Election Year 2008

Get Flash to see this player.

It only took me a couple hours to pen and record this political protest song. I posted it on September 8, 2008, under my original MJ user account "rschletty" (which I deleted in January 2009).

Chain of events leading to this song:

1) On September 3-8, 2008, I was disheartened by what turned into a grim and contentious MacJams thread I had started called "Anarchists at the RNC."

2) On Sep 6, 2008, Dadai posted these lyrics for his song "Drifting Today:"

I ask myself "Why do I stay?"
Just cut a check and leave
The crowd cries out to know the answer
Loyal agents offer reprieve.

3) I replied to Dadai on his song page:

How much of a loyal agent can I be
when I'm whipped by the same anarchy?
I thought there were things intrinsically evil
Like pulling the plug on living potential
But bunches of people say live and let die
So, friend, when you're ready, I'm ready to fly

Election Year 2008

D - C - G on refrain
C - D on verses

It's an election year
and the Devil has come to play
Frustration and fear
if you cannot have your way
and your God can't have a say

It makes me feel like dyin'
when my life is on the line
Will happiness increase
with your formula for peace?
Will the battles ever cease?

First I tell ya, then you tell me
how it oughtta be
in good old Washington, D.C.
Democracy? No anarchy!
Save the babies? No, "Save me!"

I'm on the road, don't spit on me
I'm trying to do this gracefully
Now I see the old mentality
of radical new weaponry
that'll never set us free

Like I emailed earlier...
This song fits right in with the folk/protest songs of the sixties.

Two years later
and the mess only gets deeper. I can see you playing this outdoors at a DC rally.

anarchy rules
Ha-ha, Richard … I thought "democracy" was just a polite way of saying "anarchy." Sometimes it seems that way - especially during elections.

"Don't spit on me" …is that meant to be a variation of "don't tread on me?"

I like the sound of this recording - very up front. It's like you are sitting at the front table at the coffeehouse listening to a folk singer.
