Description
Above pictured - scenic Lake harriet . . . as for a dual title for this recent composition.
Romantic Orchestral.
Form is A B C A B
five movements here
original.
featuring animated string section and woodwind solos.
on an Ensoniq ZR76 workstation . . . highlights stacking two sounds without
detuning either. Each RAM patch has a separate attack velocity and individual aftertouch properties regarding oscillation, VCF (key pressure filter) and VCA (key pressure volume) etc.
I later added / mixed/ leveled my real actual sheng recording atop the ensoniq ZR76 workstation combo . . . .
. . . This trial and ERROR experience was enriching for me - and took some time ! - but was worth it - a device was used - given to me from our old tribute band - vocal correction device - which was used to align my vocal-mic. sheng pitch - which I mixed at 65 % volume of my zr76 woodwind solo stack . . . and then combined it - this of course took several run-throughs ~ storing it on my MIDI ensoniq floppy and then playing it from this sequencer through the vocal correction device (Our old tribute-singer needed this LIVE with her husband operating the correct kebd. notes in the back room of various places - to mix and correct our singer's pitch)
I plan on another 'take' of Enceladus (Polar Friction Thaw)(Lake Harriet) without the Sheng . . .
Free reed sheng is used on my 'Lake Harriet' from 'Enceladus Polar Friction Thaw'.
I like its stacked sound because it has variety within itself - and is not 'sterile'. As in most all of the
even most modern software . . . so many of the editing
and important tweaking parameters are left behind or forgotten or not understood or fully studied and experienced by the software designers anyway. What good is 100 gigabytes of a sterile sampled sound if you can't
edit it freely on stage.
A unique instrument. A Sheng.
It has from ten to sixteen separate bamboo reeds.
It is truly a polyphonic instrument.
Whatever level of air you can output
from your lungs . . . it will take in.
The unique quality of a sheng is -
it produces a more raspy nasal tone quality when
exhaling . . . inhaling it produces a different
sonority . . . which is more flutelike and flanged.
At least when I play it.
This Sheng was purchased at Anthony's Antique store for 35 dollars - it used to be on hwy 494 in bloomington, MN. A Sheng (I call it a dwark because I want to ~ and this is my free Dough Maine LOL) can be played constantly without stopping.
As it produces tone - in and out !
This tune was recorded in five LIVE segments -
maybe accounting for the variation of tone color.
and mic proximity and angle.
This one is kind of falling apart - but still works.
maybe it should have been oiled more with lemon oil or whatever. A few effects were added later - mostly in the C movement - via cool edit pro 2.0 and creative media interface . . .
The title of the entire work and all its movements is 'Enceladus Polar Friction Thaw'.
Enceladus is a moon of saturn ~ I figured it is the size of a standard BB from a BB gun. . . . by comparison - Saturn is the size of a jumbo beach ball
at an slight eliptical average distance of 3 feet . . .
of course the pull of saturn really rips this little moon guy all around . . . creating heat similar to
when you bend a wire hanger fast - and it gets hot -
enceladus is full of geyser plumes shooting out which have been recently discovered to be of H2O and various forms. Friction has brought this exposed polar region
nearly to the temp. of zero degrees C. - which is very warm compared to most anything out this far - which commonly we are talking a minus 250 degrees C. at least.
for moons far from their suns . . .
As of March 8, 2011 there are 62 natural satellites with confirmed orbits. Of these, 53 have been officially designated as moons and named. 9 (provisional) have list designations and confirmed orbits, but are not yet official moons, so have not been named.
In addition to the rings, there are countless pieces (of varying materials, sizes, densities, masses, and life expectancies) orbiting Saturn. Solid data on the remaining satellites are lacking, but as much as anything else, a clear, limiting, definition of the term, moon, is lacking.
