Maria Elena 2nd Version

 Genre: Acoustic

Neil, Jiguma mentioned about my midi bass on the last rendition of Maria Elena could be improved. So that kind of ate at me. So I went out and bought an electric bass. A nice guy named Don sold me this bass near were I lived and gave me a quick lesson and here I am doing this tune over again. I realized that the tune sounded better with my acoustic Santa Cruz as a rhythm than my classical single cutaway Taylor so that was added as well, plus a bunch of messin around in Logic. . .

This is different from your other creations, a little more romantic and flowing and melodically not as frantic. Love it. A steal of a download.

Very nice redo, Bill
The new bass give this a much more live feel, and sound quite good. I agree with you decision to use the Santa Cruz for the rhythm part. It seems to have a more mellow sound to it while still keeping it crisp.

Again you delight me with another version of this all time favorite of mine. Thanks for the D/L my friend.

Hey Bill!
Bill, I'm pleased (and a little surprised) that my comment inspired you to go out and buy a bass. I think the difference in the bass track here is worth the $$ and effort too. As a first bass effort, this is a great start - I'm sure you'll get better and better at it the more you play it.
A reflection: the band I'm in has always had problems getting (and keeping) good bass players. One of the things that always surprised me was the attitude of everyone (except bass players) is that anyone who can play guitar can play bass. It's very much a different instrument that requires a different way of thinking compared to playing guitar. If I was going to make any suggestions regarding your bass track, maybe you could try to think outside the 1 and 3 beats, sometimes leaving them out and sometimes adding grace notes on the 2 and/or 4. This clip shows pretty much what I mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AszqfR6as8k
Good on you for getting the bass Bill - I'm totally sure you'll be a master in no time, and I think you'll find that it really expands your options when you are recording. I'm looking forward to watching your progression on a new instrument.
You play the guitars on this so nicely, as with everything you touch.
Best wishes from Oz,

Thanks Neil
Ya, the bass is fun for sure, what I love about it is I can go back in time and start doing tunes that I've loved that have the bouncing bass with instrumentals more of the golden oldies etc.

Thanks for the inspiration, tips etc. ! And of course being such a great member of the MJ community !

What a nice tune
I really love the sound of your Taylor. Clean and well executed. I like the latin European style genre. Thanks for sharing.

So good!
I am so proud of you Bill. This proves that you can play a single note lead just as superbly as you do a complex fingerpicking song. There is something to be said about doing this kind of song once in a while. The simple beauty of the guitar tone playing a nice slow tempo melody is really fantastic! And then to start playing bass also. You are a true musician my friend! I think this is even better than your first version!

Wow this takes me back
I remember hearing this on radio, and this is just as lovely as those renditions if not moreso. Your skill in bringing out the best of this composition is quite remarkable. And good on you for going for the bass. I've often thought about doing the same but have always chickened out. It's inspiring.

Be well Bill,
