Nice one Bill
Excellent embrace of the loopiness of the challenge - and I love the Spotless Mind pic. Great reference.

this ended up being a sequel to my first LIOLI song - the movie "Spotless Mind" plays in a similar space IMHO, both in this song and my first one - i guess

thanks!

Lacuna (Breaking Free)
There's a wonderful melody in the bass line alone. When the bass drops out at about 1:05 you treat us to some great chord changes. I love the use of the funky distorted guitar loops and whip like snare drum. Very effective use of a key change! My favorite SmokeyVW post!

since the loop kind of dominated the chords, that left some space for a bass melody... and some playing around with percussion. the portamento synth got added late in the process - it a sort of non-lead part if that makes any sense...

thanks

loops
aren't they a bitch? I always feel so locked down by them. You have a good variety of textures here, but it still feels like something is missing. For instance, the first 30 seconds build up very nicely, but then around 0:35 you take it back a notch without ever having reached a climax.

Second half, after 2:00 another glorious build-up and this time it actually doesn't feel like something is missing. In total, I like this track. Great sounds, and cool story arcs.

i appreciate the careful listen and thoughtful comments. maybe that "something that is missing" is the lacuna? or i'm just making excuses. honestly i do not know!

the concept i had was to remove elements until the bare loop remained (around 1:05) (sort of a backwards climax) and then build it back up from there

for the ending i brought in the original material again, just because i tend to do that: end where i started

thank you

(it is sort of like the form of the movie i mention below)

it's strange how the same loop can inspire so many different chord progressions...

i had fun making the closing low pass filter ending!

thanks

The melody broke it
great job with the melody line and bass to "take away" the nausea of that loop; the build up after ~2:00 is nice and to fade away...

Bass
and percussion in the second half build up is choice. Love the key change! Once again, I'm blown away by how much talent there is in this place. It's quite humbling that I can contribute a little myself. This is brilliant.

Excellent Job
Of all the looped songs I've created I never once thought of manipulating the loop to such a degree. This gives a whole new challenge.

Thanks for the inspiration. Excellent job.

Naturally fav'd and downloaded.
