Description
This song is from my 2nd CD, released 2008, called "Heaven". The CD is my musical interpretation of a hypothetical soul's journey from the moment of death to the moment of redemption. It is intended to paint an emotional picture of an uncertain path; one traveled with tentative steps, fraught with fear, trepidation, and loss, but leavened with hope and faith. This is the second "movement of the concept piece. I am remastering the CD for re-release, as it is nearly out of out of print and I though I'd take the opportunity to freshen it up a bit before the next production run. This music is a departure from my usual smooth/contemporary jazz; it is a fusion of Ambient, with jazz flavorings. It's darker and moodier than my other stuff...

The Light of Valhalla
Reflective & contemplative. Sounds chosen complement each other well. Lush string pads impart depth. My favorite is the bass sound. All the part are sitting well in a terrific mix.

Thanks Dave!!
That bass sound is the fretless bass patch on the RD-500. I'd have played it on a fretless bass, but I don't have one anymore... :) (Had one but it busted a truss rod and I never replaced it...)

Thanks very much man...
One advantage of this musical idiom - no open mics - much easier to get a good field set up... :) That, and really good monitors. I found that when I finally coughed up for a really solid, accurate and quiet monitoring setup, my mixes got INSTANTLY better because I could hear them. I'd pooh-poohed the notion until it was demonstrated to me. Best money I spent in the studio, and it wasn't hyper expensive or anything.

deep kick drum
in headphones, the percussion stands out, tickling the synapses. The electric guitar sound takes me beyond the hedges to arial boundaries... a delightful soundscape that seems to breathe in and out, pulling at my thoughts like the constant waves on the shore of longing. Beautiful mix.

Magical
Leave it to my sugar-induced mind to subconsciously see "Vanilla". What a wonderful piece, very sensual and serene. You created this in Adobe Audition? Very impressive!

wonderful
Great production as expected. The fretless bass is such a sweet instrument. The music is luscious, sweet and very smooth. One can never imagine a better bed to lay in. One suggestion(just me) would be a great piece for vocals. If you ever revisit this one.

Thanks so much for sharing. Downloaded and faved! patty:)

Here's an interesting one for you about that; my besty (Shelly Starks) surprised me on my birthday 2 years ago; she'd taken one of the other songs from the CD this one is from, and she'd put worlds to it!! I plan on posting it here, we recorded the vocal over my original part and I just put a nicer mix on it the other night...

Hi....
This is uber cool. A great piece of laid back listening. More Chill than Ambient to me (or New Age).

Take care.

"Chill"? :)
That's a genre? I didn't even know that.. I'll have to look into that a bit... I knew it was a little too dark to be New Age, I thought it seemed more along the lines of Ambient, but hey, if it's Chill, than I'm fine with that. :) Thanks very much for listening!

Valhalla
Phil, you've got layers upon layers of depth in both the musical content and the overall concept that I don't even know how I'd go about doing it if I was to try. Awesome stuff. Dark and moody it is, but also smooth and considered. Excellent craftsmanship.

I think it's an illusion to a degree...
Lemme count the parts... (opens session) Well, there are 11 tracks, though many of them are incidental percussion... There's a drum loop, the shaker, an "ahh choir", bar chimes, cymbal rolls, two different complex synth pads (I think that's where you're hearing the depth), the lead bass line, the beginning strings, the random voices track, and the monk shaker. So, it's really 4 complex tracks, with a bunch of other little colors... Thanks very much for the kind words, this was one of those that just sort of wrote itself... :)

It just drifts...
Ok... I could just listen to this over and over. It really never goes anywhere... it just drifts. I forgot where I was for the duration of the piece. How do you get the bass drum so deep and present in the mix. Great job of using subtle little things in the bed like the percussion and it almost sounds like a faint voice like a short wave. This is real dreamy. My favorite so far. Thanks for the download.

Thanks Stan!
That kick drum is one of the stock ones in the DR-660, tuned down about a third from the stock pitch... I just sequenced the part in the DR-660, and played it into my recording rig in realtime. It ended up so big I actually had to roll off the lows on the drum track a little... :)

Drifting toward the light.
Delicious bass lead. You and Jaco, eh?
Nicely done - not too many tracks - just enough. The best pieces write themselves, and knowing when they're ready to come out of the oven takes experience and talent. You got it.

Thanks, Jack!
And this song is just stage two of a seven-movement journey... Why would I do a CD about a soul's journey through death to eternal life? Well, I as watching the Warren Beatty film Heaven Can Wait, and that scene near the beginning where he doesn't know he's dead yet triggered the question... "I wonder, if when you die; your soul perceives the passage of time, and if so, what might it be feeling during that journey?" So, I just wrote to that premise...

Celtic mystery
Very nice ambient field created for mood and transcendence. My ears wanted more of a bass solo section, becuz to me it seemed like everything was setting up for a moment that never quite came, like a Prelude. Although it is immaculately produced and performed. If you are remastering, consider a melodic overlay. Really nice depth of field soundscaping.
