not sure what exactly is going on here. I started writing a drum part, then began chopping out chunks to put effects on and writing counter rhythms on a marimba instrument and some other percussion instruments I put together. after that I put down the main keyboard part using Mike and Daves "Harmony Box;" which is a synth that lets you write harmonies and chords to follow whatever you play on the keyboard. I have no idea what chord I ended up using as I just kept twisting the knobs until it sounded interesting to me.
I put one deep bass part and another bass that just modulates every once in awhile. for vocals I used a sample I have of a girl singing, and I sang along with "her." on her voice I used a hall reverb setting but turned the reverb off abruptly as each of her notes ended (to make it sound very fake, and to give myself a chance to rip off Kraftwerk). My voice is distressed to death and I was going for a vocal sound that you might hear on an old Can record.
The whole "song" kind of reminds me of something that would accompany a visual. Not sure what I think of the synth solo in the middle, but couldn't think of anything else to go there. Originally I had written some lyrics about how under a capitalist system, the means of production dictate everything. you know, the whole false consciousness thing. Decided that writing a Marxist song was kind of cheesy and left it alone.

I don't know if this falls under rock? It's pretty groovy... soulful, electro jazz. It has a great groove ... like the repeating vocal bit and the cool synth over that funky drum ... I think at around 1:10 when the vocals stop and you head into that little synth part I would have turned it up a touch in the mix but thats all subjective isn't it. I really like the groove.
