Description
Another piece from my 2008 moodier concept release, "Heaven". This tune sort of sits in the middle of, and anchors the CD; it depicts most of the motion on the album...

Here are the full liner notes of the CD; so you can see what it is about, and what mission this song fulfills:

Heaven is my musical interpretation of a soul's journey from the moment of death to the moment of redemption. It is intended to paint an emotional picture of an uncertain path; one traveled with tentative steps, fraught with fear, trepidation, and loss, but leavened with hope and faith.

Passage - The soul leaves the old world and enters the new; with unexpected impact. It is a fearful place at first, wrenching the newly-perceived senses... awareness comes of a journey ahead.

The Light Of Valhalla - The soul realizes what has happened, senses a direction, but is dark and confused. Movement begins.

The Haunted - The soul reflects on past existence; sorrows for transgressions; weeps for caused pain, revels in shared joy.

The Journey - The soul more confidently moves onward, purposefully striding toward the destination. More time to reflect, to rest, to wonder.

The Sentinel - A pause; the soul realizes that reckoning is at hand, that spiritual recompense is needed. Contemplation follows; unrest, hope, confusion again.

Despair - The soul retreats to an embryonic state, a barren, open, exposed place. A grain of sand in a massive, all white space, no sense of direction. Fear, dread, even irrational terror and hopelessness mix with a growing sense of hope and light.

Ascension - Realization dawns; light is everywhere. A fierce sense of achievement, victory, joy, and love intermingled with longing for what has passed. A brilliant light cracks the dawn, redemption is gained, the soul ascends...

If you want to know where the inspiration for this CD came from, just ask, I'm happy to tell...

While I certainly welcome learned and thoughtful criticism and suggestions, understand that this is an already released commercial work, so I won't be changing it; but I will more than gladly consider all valuable input for the building of my next CD, which is in the beginning stages... I have a lot to learn and that's why I'm,here. Thanks!!

A real reflective piece of music Phil, really well crafted together, well done
ic42 said 2890 days ago (June 24th, 2011)
love the concept of your concept album
I like the little piano motif that floats through this, as well as the gentle touches of soundscape... you hint at nature sounds (rain sticks etc) but it doesn't overwhelm, just adds subtle color. Relaxing, cleansing music, very nice.

Now if I remember correctly, you are planning an enhanced re-release of this, right? It's on my to-get list after hearing Valhalla too.

Drakonis

Yes...
I'm going to re-release a remastered (gently, most of it doesn't need too much help) version of this shortly... Would you believe that all of the layered complexity in the synth pads is one patch? This song only has 4 tracks, the drums, the keyboarded bass, the piano, and the one synth pad, it's just an inordinately rich one in the Korg Triton, mildly tweaked to my needs...

Long intro...
I'd shorten that I think. zzzzz Some smoove grooves after that. Waiting for the beat to change a little.... Oh ok there it goes to quarter notes on the kick. I think you need some drum help Phil. it paints pictures even if it is a little boring on the rhythm section. I see a guitar in your avatar... Where's all the guitar on this? Not too bad though. JD liked it so.... LOL This would be good to sleep to.... That's not a bad thing either....

Hey Phil...
All this discussion in the latest thread about constructive criticism and you have to deal with something like this--my apologies. I enjoyed this so much I came in for another listen. Michael

Context is key...
By itself, without the aid of the rest of the CD, this piece may not stand up as well as it would if you were to listen to the entire work, as it is sort of intended. Also, given the content inspiration, I was shooting less for "song" than I was "mood"... I wanted to deliberately inject a sense of a fair amount of time passing... I wasn't trying to paint especially complex pictures, just one of a plodding sense of purpose... and the choice on this entire CD was no acoustic drums (in fact, this is one of only two tunes on the CD with any sort of beat or groove in that sense), and not a lot of guitar at all (only one piece has any, and it's a classical, playing the melody)... I do appreciate all the feedback, I'm glad you took the time... I think my Autumn Breeze stuff would likely suit your tastes more than this admittedly experimental and concept-based CD... :)

I wasn't offended in the slightest by Loob's breakdown, I'm glad he took the time! Clearly, it was not his cup of tea, and that's totally cool. I have other things he might like better, and that's what makes the world go round. :)

Journey
absolutely loved the description. my kinda read. i do a little writing on the side and do quite a bit of reading on the subjects you touched on (but in no way with any religious slants). the tune itself captured the 'feel' well.

Contemplative and enjoyable. I think your changes were done expertly and were very well timed. I listened to this a couple of times. Like the change at 4:20. Beautiful work - much enjoyed!

I'm no expert by far, but I do know what I like to listen to. This is a beautiful Ambient piece. Loved this!

Well, since you asked...
You're too young probably, but there was a movie back in 1978 called Heaven Can Wait (a remake of the 1943 classic) where Warren Beatty plays the QB of the Rams, and he is killed before his actual time to go, and the heavenly administration has to find him a new body and stuff. (this is a greatly simplified explanation) There is a scene right after he is killed where he's wandering around in a mist, and he doesn't know he's dead, and it gets explained to him. It occurred to me to wonder if, when you die, is there a passage of time from the moment you die till the moment you discover your ultimate fate/salvation? And if so, do you sense that time, and how might you feel while you passed through that time? The movie is a romantic comedy, but I dialed it a notch more serious and just wrote to the premise. Imagine a soul, feeling the passage of time while it awaits salvation. Would it feel anything?

Beautiful piece
In an interesting setting. Need to listen some more to your songs I believe... Also, I have always wondered why "ambient incorporates elements of [...] jazz". But now I know, and even if I am not a great jazz fan I totally liked this piece.

I'll be right back after some sleep...

Thanks and take care,
Henke

WHen I classified this...
I actually referred to it as a fusion of ambient and jazz, it's sort of ambient music with jazzed chord changes. :) Fine line between that and New Age, I suppose... (though I always defined New Age as "Good Folk musicians that learned to use an eleventh chord...") :) This isn't my main arena musically; I play mainly in the smooth/contemporary jazz space, but it's mostly mellow and palatable, I don't get too "outside"... :) Thanks for the listen!!

Very Good song....
We may have different views on the comings and goings of life but
your explanation of your view...Is cool....
I like the track a lot, moves real nice through the transitions with a
flavourful bounce, your touch on the keys is top shelf and a solid mix
here.....

Well done

I didn't say it was *my* view.. :)
It is just a hypothetical "what if..." scenario... I'm not 100% sure what my view actually is, truth be told. It evolves as I learn... Thanks for the listen, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

This is nice... very relaxing to me. I can hear the moving onward, "purposefully striding toward the destination", not hurried but not stuck either. Cool concept for an album.
