Description
This is the leadoff track from my first CD back in 2003 - "a dichotomy of silence"... First song I ever wrote with a guitar in my hand. I usually write in my head or at a keyboard... :) The wonderful John Kelly (www.johnkelly.biz) takes the guitar solo in the middle, I'm everything else... Trivia bonus points to whoever can correctly name the musical term for how I handled the ending....:)

a rarified aire on a G string...
Nice cool jazz, warmed in the middle with a bit of gritty guitar work... interesting dichotomy. The alternating A/B chords throughout gave a feeling of gentle lapping waves. The ending is a Chicago "25 chord 6/4" engaged by Captain Ritard. Do I win referential tangent points?

No, but you get extra style points....
Jeez, given your classical bent, I figured you for the one to get it... :) Oh well, Thanks for the lovely thoughts... :)

I get the beauty...
but not the theory... after all, I've only gotten to page 128 of my copy of the Harvard Dictionary of Music, perhaps it is after Hemiola or Fermata... oh wait, those are in Gray's Anatomy, wrong book, I'm so easily confused! :-)

Smooth
Nice flow to the music - very easy to listen to. Clean production. John's solo is a delight - love both the tone and the style (I'm thinking Larry Carlton). Much enjoyed!

heh heh!
I'd wager that John may not even know who Larry Carlton is; John is a country guy through and through, but yeah, I feel ya; There's some phrasing and articulation in there that could easily be Mr. C. :) Thanks!!!

Wonderful
Perfect listen before hightailing off to Dreamland. What a beautiful track, could have been the background music while Bob Ross painted. I adored him, as I do this piece, great stuff! Okay, come on, what's the answer?

Zzzzzz :)
Love the bass and how it occasionally plays around with the guitar.
Oh yeah the glorious tone of the guitar is sizzling now, beautiful over that dreamy synth.
Well, consider me relaxed

Snowscape escape
I dig the Earl Klug smooth jazz feel, the evolving guitar timbre, the snowscape ambience. It seems like you're playing in C with modal accents then end on an E chord. Not really a Picardy Third, but its stuff I love doing too, shifting tonal centers to related chords/keys. I like how you portent the moment the phrase before. Nice track. Thanks for sharing this.

Llarion said 2942 days ago (June 28th, 2011)
DING!!!
Tobin,
The verse of song is nominally in C (with that subdominant modal flourish), and the bridge modulates to F (though it never actually establishes the key center), but if you reckon it in Am instead of C, going to the AMaj9 chord on the end would kinda make the Picardy third claim... :) That's the one I was looking for, I neglected to think about the ritard, for those who mentioned the slowdown... Ain't theory grand?

Reflective & dreamy. Some fine guitar work, a really nice mix. I would never have guessed the correct term for the ending, but it sounds great.

Star Trek
Ritard, Picard, Engage... now my tangential reference up at the top there might make more sense... or not... Sometimes my humor stretches so thin, that it is best just to shake your head and walk away. :-)

love those meaty drums. also like the transition from the frosty beginning leading into a warm comfort zone. Mr Kelly knows his stuff too, but maybe a bit too upfront? felt disparate at times.

That's what happens
When you track stuff too distant in time... About a month passed between the principal tracking and John's recording, and this was done on a much less sophisticated rig (Korg D1600 hard disk DAW), and somehow, with my lesser rig it just didn't settle 100%. Well spotted!

Smooth sounding tune. I like the bed tracks in this. Johns guitar break is quite bluesy and nicely done. Real nice feel to this composition.

What I call an "Opened Window" kind of listen
...but it feels like some very fresh, clean and invigorating air is coming into my stuffy little "studio" down here. This is the style of jazz I could listen to on end--well done guys, and Phil, I especially enjoyed how you capped the ending off with a della reese con brio tutu al spinache. Thanks again, Michael
