All The Pretty Little Horses

Description
Our school district is putting on a music festival concert this spring, featuring all eleven of our elementary schools. We do this every two years. The various music teachers take turns being in charge, and this year it's my turn. I am going to have the kids sing "All The Pretty Little Horses" (the theme is American folk songs). But that song was not in our books, and I did not want to go looking for sheet music to buy, for 2000 kids. So I am arranging my own version. This is the accompaniment track I whipped up yesterday. Piano sound is from Synthogy Ivory, "Pop Dynamic C7" (I think it's supposed to be a Yamaha). Controller is Yamaha P-120, host software is GB '09, and computer is a 2009 iMac. Much of the track is quantized, but there are times when I would include a roll or a little flourish where I would purposefully let it be a little bit sloppy, just to give it a bit more realistic feel.

Next step -- open up Finale and come up with a two-part vocal arrangement.

Lyrics

Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
Go to sleepy little baby.
When you wake, you shall have,
All the pretty little horses.
Blacks and bays, dapples and greys,
Go to sleepy you little baby,
Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
Go to sleepy little baby.

Daddy’s boy, Mama’s joy
go to slumberland my baby
When you wake, you shall have,
All the pretty little horses.
hush your cries, close your eyes
dream of pretty little horses
hush your cries, close your eyes
go to sleep my little baby

Darkness falls, sand man calls
go to sleep my little baby
When you wake, you shall have,
All the pretty little horses.
up and down round and round
dream of pretty little horses
hush a bye don’t you cry. go to sleep my little baby
Go to sleep my little baby.

Beautiful stuff John. And I'm right there with you on doing your own arrangement. I talent like yourself is always going to come up with something as good or much better than an overpriced professional arranger. And I'm sure your administration appreciates the $ you're saving them. Do you plan to post the live recording with the kids?

I love what you do with this
-adding some sophistication to a very simple lullaby with some of those altered chords and extended phrase endings. I just sang this book to my kindergarteners this week. (Beautifully illustrated version that's no longer available.) and, as always, they asked me to 'do it again.' It is a very haunting melody.

Haunted by horses & dreams
Really nice arrangement. Sometimes it seems a tad too metronomic, but the charm and warmth won me over, nonetheless. Haunting.
