If You're Not There

Description
This is my attempt at a more mainstream sound; a gospel song with a little rhythm and hopefully pleasant on the ear. i have always liked melodic gospel songs with a driving rhythm, like 'Mary, Don't You Weep' for instance, as recorded by Mr Springsteen in recent years.

A bit out of my comfort zone, this, and i'm not sure that i really pulled it off, but one has to try these things!

Hope you like it.

Cheers now

Lyrics
If You're Not There

If you're not there,
Then I ain't goin',
I don't care what people say,
If you're not here,
Then i ain't stayin',
Won't abide a single day,
'Cos it don't matter what we got,
Or where we're livin' now,
Things that come an' go,
Will leave us anyhow,
Cos everything is dyin',
But for you, my Lord,
Everything is dying but for you, so,

If you're not there,
Then I ain't goin'
Nothin' gonna make me forget,
If you're not here,
Then i ain't stayin'
Don't care about how hard it gets,
'Cos, it don't matter, who you are,
Or how you made your pile,
Or how you lost a fortune,
With a weary smile,
Cos everything is dying but for you my Lord.
Everything is dyin’ but for you, so,

Instrumental

If You’re not there,
Then i feel nothing,
Nothing but a vessel of clay,
If You’re not here,
Then there’s no loving,
Nothing but an empty day,
Cos, it don’t matter what you do,
Or what you’re working for,
If love ain’t at the heart,
It’s just a empty war.
Cos everything is dying but for you, my lord,
Everything is dying but for you, so,

If You’re not there,
Then ain’t going,
Don’t care if you give me the earth,
If You’re not here,
Then i ain’t stayin’
Tell me baby, what’s it worth?
Cos, it don’t matter what you’ve done,
Or how you lived before,
Everything is moving,
To another shore,
Cos everything is dying but for you, my lord,
Everything is dying but for You, so,

Can’t you see,
That you ain’t gainin’,
Striving just to put yourself down?
Can’t you feel,
The hurt inside you,
That only love can ever heal?
Cos, it don’t matter in the end,
When and how you die,
The body falls away to let,
The spirit fly,
Cos everything is dying but for you, my lord,
Everything is dying but for you,

Repeat and fade..

some
really nice melody changes on the chorus and verses. would love to have had the lyrics to follow with but really enjoyed this Marc. To me maybe Christian Contemporary as opposed to Gospel ... but that matters little. The song is a treat. Thanks for posting it.

Glad
you enjoyed it. Tried to post the lyrics but maybe they didn't show up for some reason. Technical gremlins, perhaps?

So pleased you liked this!

Genre confusion noted! i am sure you are right.

The percussion is way in the background to me. Maybe you intended it that way. Would like to hear some harmony too. Catchy melody! Enjoyed!

Hi Freddy!
Glad you enjoyed it. i think i am still a bit hesitant on percussion. Need to get a bit of confidence there.

Harmony is a good suggestion. Perhaps with the song being in the first person, the multiple voice idea might clash, though? Will mull it over.

Thanks so much for the input and comment.

This works well
Don't know about mainstream but this works well.

The rather quirky arrangement has a charm of its own.

As close to a Steel eye span
type song as i possible to get...a bit of downtempo folk rock....and a brass Band...it don't get much better than that....folkrock on !!

Steel Eye
is good! Thank you for that comparison. Seems i can't quite get away from a folk idiom!

Thanks for listening

comfort
You're clearly stretching the boundaries of your music making here. And I think you need to make a couple more attempts before you have something that's really successful.

Your vocal and guitar parts are excellent as usual.

However.....

The drum is fairly primitive. Just a kick and (almost inaudible) cymbal? Maybe use a drum loop while you learn how to program drums?

The trumpets are, eh, eh, eh...... Let me put it this way: synthesized trumpets are almost impossible to get right. And in the middle of such a natural sounding tune as this they really, eh, eh, let's say I wish you'd left them out. If you want tonal variation using synthesized/sampled instruments why not use a piano or maybe strings, something that can sound natural with just a little effort. Trumpets are a hopeless cause, as are saxes by the way.

Sorry to be a bit harsh. You write excellent stuff, your voice and guitar are great, but the rest of the arranging craft still needs some work.

Hi Victor!
Thanks for your candour.

As i said in the song notes, i wasn't sure that i really nailed it, and you have confirmed my suspicions!

The trumpet sound i do like in this setting, but i agree that it is difficult to make it sound natural. I am a little downhearted that you consider synthesised brassy sounds a hopeless cause in themselves. It does cut down the options a bit?

The percussion is not handled with any confidence and it shows! i will look into the loops situation. i have never used that part of GB and i may repay a little investigation.

Glad the guitar and voice sort of held things up a bit!

Cheers for the pointers,

Marc

synth brass
Let me make that precise. Trying to use synth brass / sax samples and hoping to make it sound real is extremely hard. On the other hand, if you have a track that uses a lot of synths, then you can use brassy sounds and they will fit in perfectly nicely. Given how natural the rest of your sounds are, I'd go for woodwinds, harp, piano, organ, strings, tubular bells, anything but the copper.....

For you
I like this a lot both musically and lyrically. No problems straying from comfort zone. Could be lifted up by some exuberant finger-picking and harmonies, bass, tambourine. I could hear a Salvation Army band brass chorale interlude, too.

Hi John
Thanks for listening.

Yes, i see what you mean. The whole thing could really fly if a group of gospel musicians really shook it.

Unfortunately i am stuck with just me!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Melodic
and with a nice, lilting cadence. I think you did a good job on this and enjoyed listening to you Marc. I guess my only suggestion would be to lower the bass a bit on the vocal...it's a small point however--I like it as is. Thanks again and take care now, Michael

Catchy melody.
Such a great voice. Praise songs are out of my comfort zone, as well. I did go to a protestant service a few times, a couple of years back. I found that, except for a change in the lyrics, all of the songs started sounding alike to me. That band was using some formula and I got bored with it. This is creative and gentle as are all your compositions. Just do what you do best and allow experimentation until that becomes second nature as well. Sweet. Thanks.
