Description
Second installment of my songwriting assignment: same progression, three different combinations of melody and guitar pattern.

Like the last one, I went with first take, first impression, pinhole mic recording. This time, because of the content of the song, I did some editing and overlapping that would suit it. The idea is that our lives' content: objects, feelings, and memories expand continuously and I hope the song portrays how scary yet beautiful that thought is.

My cat spontaneously participated, and I could have easily edited it out, but I felt it suited the theme of the song, so I left it. Bonus points for spotting Vash the cat and any of my hiccups I may have left in.

For the third installment, I will sing about insomnia in an upbeat manner...

Lyrics
boxes of both our things
needles in tins

When you sleep
everything keeps growing.
I try to keep
from ever knowing.

buttons in jars
paper clips from drawers
digital photographs
unfinished songs

When you sleep
everything keeps growing.
I try to keep
from ever knowing.

How do you organize memories?
smiles and frowns
each accidental touch
that gave in to intamacy
this pain or that ecstasy

When you sleep
everything keeps growing.
I try to keep
from ever knowing.

One of the cross's to bear
I would love to sing high and my voice keeps getting lower. I really appreciate that beautiful sound you get out of your voice. And the fact that you are doing some pickin is a bonus!

Thanks for sharing.

whoa Estella, NOT a bad voice yourself! we're similar when it comes to the "first take" situation. i just can't keep singing the same thing over and over to get it perfect. boring. maybe when $$$ is involved i'll change my attitude.
very pretty song and relaxing. didn't catch Vash, tho. maybe my vol isn't loud enough.

$$$ Involved
I know, right? When I'm doing my album, I'm going to be a pain 'cause then I'll be a perfectionist and re-do them to no end.

I'd love to hear a "studio" version of this Stella. No surprise that I'm not a big fan of lo-fi recordings, but this has obvious potential as a song - your vocal approach is always a joy to hear - the first line is a great intro to the track. The last note works really well, and I like everything in between :)
First takes are good (I hate re-singing vocals), but maybe this one deserves some more work once the assignment is over.
Cheers,
Neil

lovely voice
I can hear the first take sound of this...but it is still a rather lovely tune and the vocals are really great (as ever). Be nice to hear a more produced version at a later stage.

Studio version...
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I hear what you're saying about wanting a more polished recording, but that's contingent on developing the songs first, then playing around town and finding musicians who are interested enough to come on board on the magical ride that is my journey to a studio-recorded album. When that happens, well, you'll all be invited to the album release party and it will be a happy day indeed. One day at a time, though.

I wish
my first takes were anywhere near as good as this!

Loved the melody and the lyrics.

It's crying out for a "studio" version.

Cheers

First take...
Yes, to the point where I improvised the descant with the record button on. I have to admit I was just lucky the first take worked when overlapped with the other stuff.

Your beautiful voice shines and transcends the rawness of the recording. I like the reverb you used on the vocal.

Thank you alackbass...
Thank you for saying that. With everyone asking for a studio recording I don't know if to be flattered that the song is good or insulted that the recording is so bad! But as long as some people like the song and singing, then I look forward to the day when my best songs can shine in a proper recording.

Good song......
Really nice vocal, you have great control and feel in your notes.....
You should hook up with Philip18 or someone like that to give
your voice a chance to really shine over a well played guitar.....
Not to say you didn't do it well, you just need to work on your touch
and that only come with time as well as playing till your fingers bleed...lol

Nicely done ...... :-)

I love the images you have in this song. Your singing is moving me to think about the message in the song and I create my own riddles guessing the underlying point. Nice work.

Thinking
One of my favorite compliments about my songs to date! If my singing moved you to think, then my music and I have done our job. I'm super curious about your riddles. As a child I was a daydreamer to a fault, constantly trying to figure out patterns to things in my life. I think I was my purest self then, and I often measure my success as a human being with how I much I allow myself the freedom to think/daydream. If your riddles are anything like that kind of thinking, then good for you!

Sweet, sweet voice Estella and great idea 3 from the same progression. I did that once and it works out better than I thought. I am also a sucker for pin hole mic work. Excellent!

Looked her up. I don't think what I do is anything like what she does, but I LOVE her. She's so cute and bare-bones honest. I aspire to that.

I meant more the sound and style. Not necessarily the content.

I meant that too..
She's got this cutesy, twangy, forced voice style that I don't anywhere near have. What we do have in common, I think, has more to do with the content. Very personal, honest, and open.

been awhile since I heard you sing. this is lovely. nice lyrics, really well sung and I personally don't mind the lo-fi feel (lets say that's a personal preference much of the time). this is great as is and would be nice recorded "properly" as well. did you play to a metronome?

Estella said 2328 days ago (July 27th, 2012)
Thanks.
Yeah. I forget that it annoys people some times because it's my preference a lot of times, too. It sounds more intimate. I love a good recording, but when I can hear the stripped down, crackly version, it's magic to me. I didn't play to a metronome. That's very difficult for me, so when I'm blocked creatively, metronome is just one more hurdle for getting it out. I'd like to. I know it would make collaborations easier. I think having the skills to use software instruments would make it easier for me to record a song to even time.

I reckon the organic, raw , intimate , fresh and untampered feel is great. Good recording....yeah would be great too, but there is something about a song in its essence and simplicity makes it beautiful. Great!!
