The Black Cat

Description
My second graders write a song for Halloween every year. This year, the song is "The Black Cats." We work with rhyming words, syllables, minor/major tonality and lots of other things that go into writing the perfect Halloween song. We sing it for the kindergarten and first grade students at lunchtime on Halloween. It's a fun project.

Lyrics
The Black Cat
refrain:
The black cat with glowing eyes at midnight.
His paws are white, his eyes are green.
He doesn't stalk in Winter, Spring or Summer,
He only stalks at midnight on Halloween.

1. He scares people when he walks around their house,
He runs and runs and runs until he catches a mouse.

2. He scares trick or treaters with a very loud screech,
He goes to the ocean at the haunted beach.

3. (Scary cat noises)

It all starts somewhere!!!
What a wonderful little song for Halloween, sung with such energy by your little ones. What a great idea to have them write a song of their very own and to teach them lots of musical "stuff" in the process. This is terrific. And those scary sounds. Just what one would imagine. I know the kindergarten and first graders will enjoy this a lot.

Love it. Great images and suitably "scary" melody. Tough intervals for 2nd graders and they're nailing it. The kids must love working with you. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for posting.

Haha!
Bet the kids loved this! When I was little, Halloween was simply not celebrated here in the UK as you do. in America. It's been imported now though; we have the full blown US version to entertain the kids, "Trick or Treat", dressing up as ghouls, pumpkins and all. I have to keep a box of sweets by the door! The children, of course, love it!

Anyway, fun tune. I may play it in my class tomorrow. :-)

Such a joy...
And a really cute song! Kinda funny that it's about a cat, and you have nominally the same progression (in the same key) as Stray Cat Strut... :) I hope we get to hear this year's number soon!

Everyone's having fun here! Good project! Theatrical sort of melody that suits the subject matter.

Takes me back
to when my kids were in grade school. Sung with such enthusiasm it's hard to not be completely melted away with these kids. A+ performance! I also really appreciate the effort you put into introducing what some may call deeper aspects of music to your students, especially at a time when curricula are putting music education on the chopping block. I can still clearly remember my early music education from around grade 3 about rhythmic reading without a staff, making all kinds of noises with shakers and sticks, and of course singing for events like Halloween and Christmas. You never know what will stick with these young folk and how they might incorporate their learning and love of music into their lives.

Be well,
Doug
