You Can't Touch Me (MJCC2013)

So here it is. I've had a terrible day trying to get this uploaded, and am already running out of time - gotta be at work at midnight and the clock is looking ominous. I've already written this info twice, and am getting a little frustrated at the repeated glitches I'm running into.

Anyway, let's hope this one does it!

Original Version: "You Can't Touch Me" written and performed by Tobin Mueller"

The original song was posted by our own Tobin Mueller as an ode to Tears For Fears back during the Lost Songs Project, and I fell completely in love with it. Just a fantastic tune - spare and elegant, it still stands as one of my favourite songs. When the first Cover Challenge came along, I got it into my head to create a Phantom Of The Opera version. Tobin was very enthusiastic, and gave me the green light.

Well.... that was five years ago. Real life, other stuff, MJ City all conspired to take up time and keep me from getting it done. I missed that challenge and the next - but when this third Cover Challenge came along, I was determined to get it finished.

And here it is. I threw the entire kitchen sink department into it, and keeping in mind I CAN'T SING, well.... I had a ton of fun. Hopefully Tobin won't regret giving me permission to hack up his beautiful song.... (nervous laugh...)

You Can't Touch Me
Checked out Tobin's first. His is a great nod to classic British 80s pop. I love that stuff (particularly Tears For Fears).

I like how you've placed the song in a musical theatre setting. By doing so you've placed your vocal style in a perfect context. The vocal comes off as a character doing a large musical number in a huge stage production. Very effective. The laughter adds to the character acting vibe. Great arrangement! The longer instrumental interludes would ideally fit dancers. Well done!

You Can't Touch Me
Stopped via Tobin's fine version first (before my time). This interpretation works very well. You have covered any perceived vocal deficiencies very cleverly with the setting and the larger than life performance. The organ(s) sound great. Great use of dynamics. A fine show finale. Thanks, Peter.

big and theatrical. I wish there were several songs as part of a complete production. I loved it. Thanks. Is your midnight job playing the organ in an abandoned subway? I got chills just thinking about it. Way to sock it out of the park! Thanks.

A Rare MR Mordenus Moment
Reminiscent of an 80's Rock Opera. Cool vocals and you had fun and so did I, listening.

Better late than never
Fantastic cover. I listened to Tobin's first and this is a bit different but you represents it well. I like your take on this. The mix sounds smoother and you did a great job on the vocals.

A fine mix. You've done a lot of work musically. What a spooky tune. Love that organ. Vocals are perfect for this style of theatre rock. And I enjoyed the kitchen sink ... great job and congrats on getting it finished.

What a take. I re-listened to Tobin's song first. It is cool how with so much the same you have a completely new song. The Phantom theme is cool. Thanks so much for sticking with it.

It is indeed such a theatrical Phantom Of The Opera version. Dramatic and humorous and clever throughout, loads of fun. Love the spoken part! Your variations are so entertaining. This is so cool. Thank you for covering this and putting so much work and thought into it. Bravo!!

Big backing that has a real musical show feel. The arrangement is always entertaining. The vocal works well - you've captured that Phantom of the Opera feel. I like this a lot!

The Phaaaaaaaantom of the Opera
Brilliant Rik. You have the skill to pull one of these kind productions off and man does it work brilliantly. LIke all good tunes that bring a smile because of their references to other pieces or musicians you have to have a lot of talent and be super observant to make it work. Very Broadway baby, very Broadway.
