Description
Truth is stranger than fiction.
I listened to the first couple of "One Hour Challenge" posts last night before I went to bed, but I hadn't really followed the challenge and wasn't thinking about entering until...
I woke up during the night with a dream still kicking round in my head. There was a full band (horn section, steel drums, do-wop girls, the works) singing THIS very chorus and it was sounding pretty good. As the camera panned out (yes, it was a TV show of a concert - go figure) I saw that the lead singer was none other than my good friend, Philip (Philip18 to MJ'ers). He was in a nautical looking blazer with a captain's hat on crooning away having a great time. Again, go figure. And, no, I don't believe that I have a man crush on him :-)
Anyway, I still remembered the chorus when I got up this morning, so I decided that I would set myself the challenge of writing some inane verse lyrics to go with the inane chorus and record it in one hour.
I managed to get it written and recorded in the time limit and this is the result. The simple I, IV, V chords didn't even need thinking about, they just played themselves. Same recording setup as last song. Again, singing and playing simultaneously, no click track, edits or auto tune (self-evident...)
Straight out of the Jimmy Buffett 101 songbook. Not a Techno beat in sight but there are hints of country in there somewhere.
I hope I haven't just subliminally plagiarised it from somewhere.
Just for fun.
Peter

Lyrics
Hey Johnny (One Hour Challenge)
[F] [C] [G] [C] [F] [C] [G] [F / G] [C]
[C] I'm sitting in my day job, staring at the monitor
Watching little fish swim [G] round
Dreaming of the islands and girls in red bikinis
With the tropical sun beating [C] down
[C] My boss looms in the doorway, points into his office
Shakes his head and then walks [F] away
He's [G] not a bad guy, and he won't break my back
But I'm pretty sure what he's gonna [C] say
Hey, [F] Johnny, don't you go drinking all [C] night
Hey, [G] Johnny, you know you'll just get into a [C] fight
Hey, [F] Johnny, why don't you just head back to the [C] sea?
Hey [G] Johnny, you know that's just where you want to [C] be
My girlfriend's talking at me, my head nods in agreement
While my mind is somewhere out on the seas
She's says that I don't love her and don't show her much affection
But I'm drifting out there shooting the breeze
Then I sense that there is silence and I break out of my reverie
But not in time to protect my head
A vase is coming at me and she's storming out the room and screaming
Not all that hard to guess what she said
Hey, Johnny, don't you go drinking all night
Hey, Johnny, you know you'll just get into a fight
Hey, Johnny, why don't you just head back to the sea?
Hey Johnny, you know that's just where you want to be

Yay! What a great job, man! A happy little jaunt, very much in the Buffet tradition! Catchy tune with a great hook!
