Another String

 Genre: Acoustic Rock

A collaboration I've been working on with my friend Kirsten (Sylkay KSB). She did the acoustic guitar and vocals on her song (author music and lyrics). I did the drums, bass, string ensemble (violin, viola, and cello), and flute. So it's a light orchestra ensemble. Sylkay asked for a good bit of verb, so that is intentional. I am wondering about two things here. I had feedback that the bass guitar is too much (loud) although I have rolled off below 60hz and compressed it. It sounds fine on my monitors, and I actually like a bit of boom, but I've been told this will hurt boom boxes, so I'd like some feecback about this. I am also wondering of the flute is distorted. I have to go and check the plugins for red lights. I think I am sensing a bit on the flute. I have a listening room planned to compare the different mixes, but I'll post another mix link here so you can listen to another mix if you are so inclined.

Another string has broken

On my crying guitar

I'm sick of writing sad songs

Of my life so far

I guess I've been unlucky

Though my songs have helped me through

Simple notes are written

Though the meaning is deep and true

Deep and true

I feel better after a session

Just my guitar and me

I guess listening

to my own words

Brings me to reality

We all have our hopes and dreams

One day I'll hear my song

Playing on the radio And

someone singing along Someone

singing Someone singing Someone singing along

Repeat chorus

If this does not happen

Satisfied I will be

The words that I have written

Came specially From me

Another string has broken

On my crying guitar

I'm sick of writing sad songs

Of my life so far My life so far

My life so far

My life so far

My life so far

My life so far

Stylish song. I don't get the clipping issues you are worried about (I'm listening on headphones). Quality arrangement. Ethereal sort of vocal. Beautiful work, Freddy.

Listening on earbuds. Mix sounds great to me. I like the verb on the vocal. Adds atmosphere and depth. Great performance. The bass is fat but doesn't seem boomy at all. The lines and runs are clear and well defined. I like the strings. They sound like a small chamber group which really suits the song. Flute sounds good to me although there is a bit of hair on it at the end. Just trust your ears. I don't think they've ever failed you.

Nice imagery in this song
I can't hear the same issues as you Fred as it's sounding pretty good to me.

Good song. Kirsten has a quality voice, too. The bass sounds fine through my monitors and the flute is layered in the song so any clipping is not readily discernible. I suppose, for me, given the song lyrics, the acoustic guitar might have played a slightly more prominent role in the song. But I am biased :-) Thanks both of you. Regards, Peter.

Beautiful -constructed song
...with a killer vocal. I think the bass IS too loud, but that's just a matter of preference. Some folks like the bass really booming. To me, it tends to drown out everything else in the band, so maybe dial it back a tad more. (Frankly, if it breaks my speakers, that would force me to get something decent!) The flute is nearly inaudible (and too busy with those frilly runs and trills). It's almost a non-entity here, so if you want flute, it'll have to come up A LOT in the mix. Keeping the line simple will also keep it from standing out as so completely different from all the rest. ... Hope the suggestions and observations are helpful as you finish this up.
