The Calm Before

Hi again MacJams - it's been awhile.
I've been listening to a lot of retro synth stuff lately and thought I'd have a go at it myself.

The video below was pieced together from Yoshiaki Kawajiri's 1988 anime, Demon City Shinjuku.

Missed you around here my friend! Welcome back and what a "note" to come back on. A really beautiful, etherial, synth pad gem. Always love having some visuals to gaze at as I am swept away by the lushness. That whammy synth bit at 1;38 reminded me of Paul McCartney and Wings for some reason in all their 80's retro synth glory. I'm looking forward to more from you. Don't leave me hangin'.

To have you back and with such a great piece as well. I still think your ambient CD is top three at least of all ambient albums I've heard, and return quite often to listen to it. Thank you for that. And now it seems you have moved on a bit, but still in a genre that I really appreciate :-) It was also fun to watch the anime, to which the music seemed to fit perfectly.

Thanks a lot for the download and take care. Looking forward to more :-)

Thanks Henke
I did a bit of editing to get the video to fit. It's a pretty good movie, actually - but I did leave all the horror elements out of my clip :)

welcome back
this is not a genre I know much about but I like how you put it together, atmospheric tune, really cool mix of synth sounds, the video is a nice touch as well. racerat is undoubtedly thinking of "band on the run" with the oscillating synth part! good job on production and mixing as always, thanks for posting!

Hi Dan - nice to see you around these parts. I like this piece, and it goes really nicely with the vid - Cool progression and use of layers, but what sets this apart is how you created a really cool groove and it just moves so nicely through the piece. Enjoyed!

Fun to figure out the various voices and percussive elements you worked into this track! Nice retro feel. Thoroughly enjoyable, saturated synth track with the transparency and wonder of crystal clean water catching reflections of the sun.

Interesting rhythmic touches
I just enjoy ambient music ... Kitaro, Ray Lynch and all the rest.   It is very interesting how you gradually bring in rhythmic elements, one by one, gradually weaving elements of the song to include more and more complexity and a driving intensity – but in an altogether pleasing way throughout.   The playing is very expressive.

Some of the synths you have employed sound so "organic", Dan. Really nice stuff. Fine dynamics and solidity to the mix. A very enjoyable listen. Thanks, Peter.
