If I could Sing

Written on a gum wrapper by Franciscus Henri

This track was broadcast live on Feb 29 1956 from platform 24
New York Grand central. (It was recorded on a Philips EL351 reel to reel tape recorder. The tape was recently found in a bin off 42nd street NY)
The radio program broadcast on WJUG 580 AM entitled “AMERICAN IDLE” and was hosted by Hamster van Damme.

Hamster van Damme was a Dutch migrant with a terrible American accent.
He died two weeks after this broadcast in a domestic accident involving a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a long extension cord, a cheese and two rubber bands

In 1956 Henri and Gardner were living on the street and unemployed after working as dishwashers in the “Whoflung dung” restaurant on 42nd avenue.
They found that after having their hands constantly in hot water they could no longer play their musical instruments and resigned to pursue their musical careers by busking.
After constant harassment from NYPD they secured a temporary gig playing inside a hotdog vending machine on platform 24 at Grand Central Railway station.
Their appearance on “AMERICAN IDLE” led directly to their subsequent success on Macjams.
Henri and Garner are now recognised as belonging to a long line of musicians who are all on the nickel.
Feel free to down load this track….everyone else does.

Historic note:
During the McCarthy hearings Henri was accused of involvement with the communist party and collaboration in the bombing of Pearl harbour.
The Lyrics below were presented as evidence.
When it was revealed during the investigation that Henri had been found in 1947 as a baby in a yet to be identified metal box in Area 51 the enquiry inexplicably ceased.

The files of the investigation are still classified as Top Secret and not available to public scrutiny.

You nailed the sound...
...but I'd put it in the late '30s...
So simple , but meticulously mixed with attention to all the details of the accompaniment as well as the precise vocal performance. Sounds like it's an authentic track from a very early live radio broadcast. How you achieved that sound quality is pretty remarkable to me. ... Your notes and description are hilarious. This number is a winner in my book.

Though I'm not one for nostalgia
I like the era of music when every thing was recorded at the one time
..and the vocal style to suite the limited technology at the time.
Thanks for your dropping in.

ROTFL ... wow!
Love it!

Now, this is what I love about music ... and MacJams.   I had no idea what to expect.   So, I just spooled the magnetic wire into the recorder (yes, I own one of those ...), checked the tubes to be sure they all were lit up, and hit “Play.”   Yes, it is a very convincing tribute to those technologically-stunted days in which great music was produced anyway.   And, a terrific, sly sense of humor!
