MJ has a special place in my heart. I'll always post music here. :-) Just sometimes I disappear for a year.

“As I Remember You” was penned in the far right corner of Jackalope Brewing Co. in Nashville. As I sometimes do, I performed this song before I was really ready, at the Puckett’s Rising Star competition in Franklin. I managed to find a rough way through it and am quite sure it is this song one judge referred to when he mentioned some as having cool riffs yet lacking substantial lyrics. I am taking this perfect moment to explore that thought, almost a year from its inception.

The lyrics are indeed simple. Not only that, you could even say they are stale! I pose to you, that is exactly what makes them fresh! When I wrote the word “train”, I knew it would either taste sour or sweet. I think the truth is you must sink your teeth deeper than the surface to find the sweetness.

Particularly in southern music, trains are the go to object if you desire to sound like a down to earth, hard working, seen some things, you know, hangs-around-trains type of guy/gal. The lyrics are simple and even cliché because that is the place the song came out of. I was sitting at that wooden table, the music was playing, the train was rolling, she was coming, and I was thinking “this is like every story ever told”.

This song seeks to echo a feeling, to resonate a small moment, one that is as powerful as a train, and as common as one too.

The music is playing as it always does
The train is rolling by as it sometimes does
And you are coming as you usually do
And I am nervous to see you

I remember the feel of this open room
I remember the sound of the train pass through
Will you remember me as I remember you?

I must find the secret
It's somewhere in the past
How to make warm feelings last
But my obsession with the past
Lost the present you

I'm scared to see your eyes
And tell you that you're missed
For I fear in the blankness that I find
I'll doubt that I exist
