Bootleg Romanticism

Get Flash to see this player.

This is my latest single, released via Vulpiano Records. It's a grossly overproduced feast with a very strong Tears for Fears influence, combined with a generous helping of Brian Wilson harmonies and production touches.

The lyrics refer to my early days writing songs with a friend. We were often grossly overambitious beyond our talent and never completed a single satisfactory track!

So many sounds and visions
So many suppositions
It was juvenile
Another symphony -
that’s what it meant to me
It was all futile

And with our arc of naivety
We never had much soul

Yeah - we were bootleg romantics

Such pointless information
Designed in desperation
It was not worthwhile
We thought we had a licence to state the sins of science
It was our design

And all the architects and axioms
Could never make us whole

Yeah - we were bootleg romantics

When I look back I see what we wanted to be

Now it’s time to realise that you and I were not that kind
We were never meant to be there
Don’t say it will come again

And with our arc of naivety
We never had much soul

Yeah - we were bootleg romantics

And we would - you never did what you should
You didn’t, you didn’t
And we would - you never did what you should

Ambitious production
There is something touching in the irony here .. that years later (after the romantic period has past) that you can let it all flow out into a fully-realized production. Of course that irony is its saving grace. Nice work.

Glad you enjoyed it. I think your comment absolutely nails it. It's very much how I felt on completing it.
