Hark the Herald Angels Sing

 Genre: Holiday

Just made it in time. Been working on this for almost two weeks and I think I could really do with working on it a bit more. Some bits in the mix are a bit muddy and I'd like to spend more time on the percussion. But I don't want to wait a year!

The song itself has an interesting history, not written by one person, but altered by a few. The melody can be attributed to Felix Mendelsshon apparently. It's all too complicated to post here. If you really want to know, Google it!

Sort of old school synth style, with a very simple [too simple] drum beat. Anyway, here it is. Hark! The soft synths are singing. A Christmas present...

I like the bell arpeggios binding the arrangement together. The big synth at 1:15 is very cool. Very festive.

Hark the Angels
I "third" the above, nice bell arpeggios, great breaks and an overall nice laid back holiday atmosphere. With that said I suppose you're right that the drums could be improved a tad - no idea how I'm afraid, I always have the same problem. Also, I wonder if it would improve with more attack on the melody synth? To me it feels it is lagging behind for this reason...

Curious about the picture too, your own or from the net? Do you know where it's from?

All the best for the rest of the holidays and for the new year!

Excellent bells!
With a bell arpeggio intro like that, I couldn't care less if the drums are 'too simple'. My Christmas wish is to hear that Keith Emerson synth at 1:15 (and again at 2:21)get developed.....

Most refreshing Mr. Jones...
...this arrangement is such a breath of fresh air from the approaches taken with it by most (including me!) and I greatly enjoyed listening to it this evening. I agree with you about the drums--maybe a bit of tweaking there--in some sections, they did their thing just fine however (which reminds me, I envy anybody who knows how to work those things like EZ Drummer, etc. I have three of these kinds of programs and I still haven't much of a clue really--what I come up with could be easily reproduced by a wind-up monkey toy). Thanks for sharing your good work and hoping you and yours enjoyed a most pleasurable holiday sir! Michael

Thanks for this holiday classic, Dave. A finely crafted take. I was trying to imagine it without the drums. Coupled with the bass, they do give it a touch of the "country and westerns" :-) Some fab analogue style synth sounds, though. Best wishes. Regards, Peter.

Love the Bells!
They add such a magical sound and well accompanied by synths and drum pulls it all together very nicely!

I love the bell arpeggios
and then the way you bring the arpeggiations into other synths. I know what you mean about wishing for a couple more weeks, but not waiting for a whole year. Been there! But do like this arrangement a lot. I did a bit of a LOL at the 'long suffering wife' software. I should probably add my own 'long suffering husband' in my list, too.

picture from that angle. I like that second section especially when it gets really fast. Very exciting, cool beats and also thanks much for being a vital part of MJ!

Oh, those little bells...
What an engaging opening!
Overall, such an unusual take on this chestnut, and most-welcomed, too. You are a brave soul to tackle such a time-honored Christmas piece, and your result is just a little piece of magic that gives new life to the original. ... Well, it only took me 7 months to get here, but I still enjoyed this very much in AUGUST.

Later than Paul
Very interesting take on the tune (but then should we expect any less of your considerable synth talents and musical sensibilities?). A little Mannheim Steamroller-esqe which is coool.

Belated Happy Christmas and I hope you post again soon!
