Climbing the Mountain

First song of 2015. First song since July of 2014. First song using Logic X.

The idea for this tune started forming a few weeks ago on a very nice, warm, sunny February afternoon. My wife and I went out to enjoy a bit of nature and stopped not too far from home at a place called Fly Mountain. It's not really a mountain, but it is the highest spot in the county and I hadn't climbed it in more than 30 years. So I did.

It's in a beautiful, forested area, far away from town, highways, homes, etc. It's very calm and peaceful and probably a nice place to drop from a heart attack after making a long, steep climb when you're 30 years older, 100 pounds overweight and incredibly out of shape. :)

It was worth it though.

This may be the last tune I do on my old iMac. It can run Logic X, but barely. And according to the specs, it's not supposed to. I just haven't gotten my workspace retooled to my new MacBook Pro. It's all bass, guitar, drums and vocals. I used a lot of reverb. No. Seriously. A lot. Like all of it. I also used the new Drummer feature of Logic X. Very nice, but I definitely need to wok more with it. The guitar is my latest acquisition, a Squire Strat and the bass is my trusty Peavey Foundation (coming up on its 30th birthday).

It felt really good to make music again. I've really missed it. I may not be compltely out of my musical desert yet, but I think I at least see Peter O'Toole waving to show me the way...

Daylight shine
Looking through the hideaway
Flying blind
Through the winter air

Forest climb
Sky above and earth below
Feeling fine
Wishing I could fly

Feel so tired
We can’t go on today
Reach the top
Here is where I’ll stay

Telling time
Shadows on the leaves below
Counting stones
All along the way

Breathing deep
I know I cannot stay
From the top
Can I find my way

Daylight hides
Sleep behind the clouds above
Sylvan dream
Becomes reality

Nice mix and I like the guitars. Has an airy feel to it and reminds me a little of Fearless from Pink Floyd's Meddle LP. You did a fine job with the vocals as well.

Sounds great. I was expecting runaway reverb, but it sounds really good. The nature lyrics are beautifully expressed in your smooth and patient delivery. Well done.

That's a lot of reverb
as it starts but the way it drops down to the vocal is very effective. Then it gradually builds again. Like a renegade from the 80s.

Welcome back!

Love the gentle vibe. Nice vocal to match, complimented by tasteful use of effects. A very strong return.

Great to hear a new one, Joe. Dreamy and gentle. Liking the vocal work. The 'verb works well, too. Hope there are more Arabian nights in the works. Take care, Peter.

Huge Sound
All that reverb works in a trippy kind of way. It sounds like you're in a huge cave. Yet the guitar cuts through well.
