Description
The Trailing Car is from a restored cassette recording I made about 25 years ago. It was simply a guitar and voice, and I never thought to add anything more. It captured the original feel of the song, so I wanted to use it rather than try to duplicate the anguish I must have felt when writing it.
I don’t know what inspired it. I can’t recall having suffered any tragedy back then. I think I just got to wondering how it would feel to lose someone so dear, and have absolutely no comfort whatsoever. It’s a sad elegy, but also becomes a little brutal and angry, so I won’t call it entertaining. I suppose it’s just one of those things you just have to get out.
Roxylee was kind enough to contribute her angelic voice, which, for this particular song, was asking a lot, but I felt my character deserved at least a sweet memory. Thanks, Roxy, you remain undefiled! And thanks, everyone, for listening.
Davisamerica2: Guitar, harmonica and vocals.

Lyrics
The Trailing Car
I was slumbering on this passenger train as it rolled on up the line
Like a baby, you get rocked to sleep as it twists around the pines
And the eyes, they will play tricks on you when they’re focused on a dream
I could have sworn it was you I saw sitting by that mountain stream
But no…..no….no
With vacant eyes, the travelers sit and think of those they’ll meet
Avoiding thoughts of harvest time, they sway like ripened wheat
I know it’s cold and dark back in that trailing car, but I can feel you next to me
Still I can only go with you a ways into eternity
I recall the time we rode this train into a rising sun
We had no reason to believe the day was almost done
We fixed our eyes on paradise, the way that lovers do
But in that earthly paradise, I never dreamed I’d be losing you
And I’m doing all I can to keep yesterday
I’m gathering up every memory we shared
I’m trying hard to hold on, but it’s slipping away
Oh God! This is too much to bear
But you can’t haggle with fate, and as everybody knows
You don’t barter with God when he rakes in his gold
Now they tell me I must carry on, and true love never dies
But I’d never lived until I saw my reflection in your eyes
Now I look for hope in that setting sun as it flashes through the trees
But in the dark and gloomy tunnels, a hopeless face looks back at me
And I’d do anything to keep yesterday
But there’s not a damn thing I can do
I got down on my knees, but I don’t know how to pray
I just know I can’t live without you
I said “Lord, bring her back, if you truly want my soul.
You give her back to me now, or I’ll become the devil’s coal!”
He said “No……No…….No”
