Conscience Objection

Get Flash to see this player.

This is a demo of a song I wrote for a 23-year-old philosophy major after she uttered the first two lines one day at work as a coffee barista. She plays guitar and sings .. so it seemed like a natural thing to do: to show her how to extract material from her own life and turn it into a song : )

The art work is simply an image found on the Internet.

I almost didn't put on make-up today
I almost skipped Pilates, too
but then my conscience got the better of me
so I did all those things I really didn't want to do

there are some things in life we have no control over
no matter what the philosophers say - free will be damned
by why do I keep doing things I don't want to do
is something I seem to not understand

he took me out
I took him in
and for a while I thought maybe it just might work
but then the lout started to pout so I
kicked him out
when he couldn't stop being a jerk

I almost didn't go in to work today
I almost called in sick and stayed in bed
but then my conscience finally got the better of me
so here I am among the walking dead
instead of bed
here I am among the walking dead

Conscience Objection
Trademark guitars and vocal style. Thoughtful and entertaining lyrics. Good one, Warren.

Ha-ha .. my vocal limitations didn't stop me from trying to sing a song that is beyond my capabilities. That's why I refer to it as a demo! Really, all I wanted to do was show this gal how it could possibly be sung .. you know .. by somebody who actually can sing : )

A truly individual approach Warren. Always enjoy your words and your offbeat musical backing.

The Flash
This is one of those songs that practically wrote itself. As soon as I added the last two lines of the first verse .. the entire structure for the concept flashed before my eyes. I love it when that happens (probably because it doesn't happen all that often!).

No control
Are the rhythmic accents deliberate? There is some weird stuff happening with drum and guitar hits.

Or maybe you've just made a philosophically consistent dissertation on life's haphazardness.

Giving directions
I think .. because it is a demo trying to be suggestive to a younger musician .. everything gets a scintilla of exaggeration. Well, at least that element is deliberate. It really was thrown together not as a labor of love .. but with the love of drawing someone a road map.

That said, I like your second interpretation better : )
