I've been developing a collection called "City Songs" which tries to mix melodies coming out of my head with sounds recorded in the urban environment. I suppose you could call it the within/without approach to composition. I outlined ideas for a dozen songs, which seemed like a big enough bite to chew on (they are in various stages of completion). However, in September I attended the U.S. Open tennis tournament and suddenly a 13th song was added when I started recording the crowd's response to a second-round match between Andy Murray of Great Britain and Marcel Granollers of Spain. You just never know where you might find your next song : )

The category I wanted was "Sport Rock," but "Art Rock" is close : )

Fun, mayhem and the gracious game of tennis all 2.5 minutes. Congratulations Warren on another genre busting creation. I tried a similar thing once, but they wouldn't let me bring my guitar into the stadium.

Stringed instruments
Ha-ha .. you should've smuggled the guitar in disguised as a tennis racket : )

I have to admit I find the tennis gets in the way a bit - I'd prefer the music to dominate more than it does - but I can see what you're trying to achieve here and admire the thinking.

In or out?
Balancing the guitar against the racket of the crowd - you have put your finger on the hardest part of making this composition. It seemed to me those two elements - the music and the noise - represented the concept as a whole - that there was a battle for dominance going on. Sometimes one, then the other, gained the momentum during the flow of the game. Now, whether I have pulled this off .. or faulted .. you be the line judge : )

and interesting tune. i'd suggest a song featuring golf but it might be less interesting ;-)

Other opportunities
While making this piece I couldn't help but wonder about what other sport situations might offer a similar contrast to the library-hush and explosive roar of a big league tennis match .. and golf came to mind. I have no plans to do make a song out of that. Unless, of course, I find myself attending another "U.S Open" event that involves putting a ball with a club .. rather than smacking a ball with a racquet .. and listening to how a crowd reacts to that.

Conceptual art
The collection I'm working on - mixing ambient city sounds with melodies that pop out of my head - has been a conceptual challenge. This one came together rapidly. Others have not be so cooperative. But that's music making for you : )

Fun with the Open
I can only think of the fun you must have creating and playing songs like this one. It's like, no matter what happened, I'm going to have a good time. The use of urban sounds is cool too, and it provides a nice contrast with what's going on in your melody. Good one.

Tantalizing efforts
If only all musical efforts generated as much fun and satisfaction as this production - where the disparate pieces came together in a unified whole rather easily and quickly. I love it when that happens! Of course, it doesn't happen very often - just often enough to keep it tantalizing.

Guitar dual
digging the dual, nice chops through out. Love how the melody changes and how it's sits in the match... cool concept and i like how you portrayed it.

Keeping it fresh
Melody and variation - that's my main thrust when it comes to playing the guitar. Of course, there are other factors like rhythm and timing and nuanced stresses that go into the performance. Trying to get all of that to work with the environmental elements is the big artist challenge here - that, and letting it sound fresh. I appreciate your response.

Sports Rock
"Well, now Murry has the advantage."-Well!
Yer chop technique works just right here.
The mix is more spacious than last outing perhaps, because yer guitar technique features little sustained notation, it's hard to hear the space. There is a nice court here.
Thanks for posting with us Warren!

One idea was to let the guitar work mirror the game .. in that sometimes the play was powerful as a big serve and other times it was deft as a drop shot. Another idea was not to get overly-complicated - that the idea of pairing the sounds of the game and the guitar (and percussion) needed to be fairly straightforward - to let the storytelling work without becoming hopelessly entangled. Whether I successfully accomplished all of this is open to question .. but trying to do it is the reason behind the effort : )
