Life's A River

In large part, 2016 has not been the best year for me. But it has also been one of the most positive times in my life.

For most of the year to date, I've been dealing with a great many health issues. I won't go into details, but some have been rather serious and have radically changed my life in many ways. The upside to it all of this is, while some things will stay with me for the rest of my life, what will also stay with me is a new, healthier lifestyle and a more positive outlook on my life and the people who are in it.

I came up with the chorus to this tune during one of my several stretches where all I could do was lay in bed and wait for things to get better, which they did. It took me several months to get back to the point where I was able to finish the song and get it recorded. Getting to the point where I could play guitar, sing and get everything recorded was a goal to keep reaching for. And it helped.

Now, for the first time in months, things are going well. My health is good and I feel good. Better than I have in as long as I can remember. And like the song says, I know at some point I'll hit more troubled waters, but they'll wash over me and become calm once again.

Life's good. Enjoy it and, I hope, this tune.

Life’s A River
©2016 Joseph Gurner

I wake up every morning G
Thankful that I’m here C
Hoping for that peace of mind Am
That seems so far away G

Been through so many changes G
Each and every day C
A whole new world is facing me Am
Bringing on the fear G

I took for granted F
The things that make life real Am
Now I hold on tight F
And step into the sun G

Life’s a river D
Flowing strong C/G
Moving over me D
On and on C/G

Troubled waters come to me D/C
Time and time again F/D
But they move on by D
And the river’s calm again C/G

I lay down every evening G
Weary to the bone C
Looking for that peace of mind Am
Another day away G

A brand new day has come and gone G
Time to get my rest C
Face the darkness once again Am
Stepping though my fear G

Moving further every day F
Leave the dark behind Am
Now it’s time to say goodbye F
To what I leave behind G

Life’s a river D
Flowing strong C/G
Moving over me D
On and on C/G

Troubled waters come to me D/C
Time and time again F/D
But they move on by D
And the river’s calm again C/G

Hang in there
2015 was a tough one for me and with the help of my family and a decent doctor, things have turned out for the better. Good to see that things are going better for you. Love the harmonies, progression and the subject matter. Thanks for sharing.

a beautiful song joe
too bad it took such crappy circumstances to bring it about. it's very positive, as is your description, and positivity is in such short supply these days. the harmonies (and the bridge) are delicious.

like everything you do this has such a great organic feel. glad you're feeling better! I like the Grateful Dead harmonies on the chorus a lot. the solo is really nice too - just right. true about taking the 'real' for granted, especially in these days of the internet.

Life's A River
Great to hear that you have come out of the rapids of life rejuvenated and rejoicing, Joe. Positive, life-affirming song. Great harmonies. A touch of the CSN's for sure. I like the inspiring swell of the chorus. Thanks. Take care.

Those harmonies
are so Byrd-like - Sweetheart of the Rodeo era.
Glad you have come through 2016 OK Joe and that your health is on the up and up.
Great to hear you posting something new, especially something so meaningful for you and enjoyable for me.
Cheers from Oz,

So easy to take for granted
all that we have. I can feel from your song that you've come through tough times not just healthier but more content and appreciative. I have found the same - it's so easy to have a ratchet for our level of expectations. Sometimes it takes a big hammer to break the ratchet. Sometimes the ratchet starts to form again and needs another knocking down by reality.

This is a lovely song Joe. Right from the heart, and so well put together. The chorus almost reminds me of a CSNY song. Thanks so much for sharing your joy and new perspective with us. And for allowing us to download your song so we can be reminded in future of all that we should be grateful for.

Take care.

Hey Joseph...
I too struggle with a number of health issues. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

This is a very lovely piece. Your voice reminds me a little of Justin Hayward. A plus to be sure.

Good honest lyrics that I can relate to.

Again, VERY nice tune!

Be well friend!
