The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone

 Genre: Indie Rock

Get Flash to see this player.

So when I was about twelve I got a book for Christmas about Robin Lee Graham, a teenager who sailed around the world alone in the late sixties/early seventies. I read the book about sixteen times. I hadn't realized until that point that I could actually do real stuff as a kid, or at least dream about doing real stuff. He was/is a lot like me - we both should have been born a hundred and fifty years ago. Musically, this is has a lot of beach boys in it - at the time I was hooked on Pet Sounds. And there's also that carolina 90's DIY indie rock vibe that I like so much and then a bunch of 80's synth stuff. I just kind of shuffled things around until it did what I had in mind.

Robin Lee Graham was sixteen years old
when he set sail from honolulu
with two kittens in a 24 meter
custom lapworth sloop
he was on his way to american samoa
when a storm took away his mast
but he was brave and fierce and young
and he slipped through the ocean's grasp

takes me away from where I'm going
I know a sloop john b
is out there waiting for me

Robin Lee Graham met a girl in fiji
an american girl like him
love loves a co-conspirator
and she sailed away with him
from 66 to 69 they sailed from
guadalcanal to the virgin islands
they were brave and fierce and young
and they just wanted to have fun

Catchy chorus.
I had your hook playing in my head for several minutes after listening which is what pop is supposed to do.
You should grab a Hammond Piper to play around with if you can find one for free or cheap on CL. You'd dig the sounds.

playing in your head
that's the goal - thanks for the listen, and i'm looking for a hammond piper now. Just the name is worth the purchase.

You sure have a way with a chorus! Probably a little crunchy overall for me, but it's a really enjoyable tune with lots of interesting stuff going on. I hear a little space for a theramin in there. Now that's a teenage adventure for you - certainly not anything I would have ever considered - but it appeared to have worked out pretty well for Robin ;)
Cheers from Oz,

i've always wanted a theramin. Robin spent time in Australia and NZ on his honeymoon and reading about that began a brief fascination with all things Australian. That and Men at Work. Vegamite!

Sailing away
What a great combination of influences. You have done well in combining them into a really nice song. I want to go and check out that book now. Thanks.

Robin Lee
It's a great book, and this song is pretty much about the fact that some influences stay with you forever - like the book and like the bands that influenced this song and every other song I write.

The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone
Plenty going on. I liked the opening. Then perhaps that throbbing verse got a bit to too busy to really take the lyrics in. I can sense a good hook happening in there but, to me, the serenade of synths tended to swamp it. I guess when I thin sailing, I always think analogue/acoustic. Great idea for a song. Thanks.
