Union Busting

When I was a kid the Teamsters tried to unionize the distribution center where my father was a site manager. They told everyone to get in line around the union or 'else', which didn't go over well with my father. If they had told him not to join the union they could have easily had him on their side because he'd have rush in to join. Anyway this tune is about that, driving in through the gates with the angry men my Dad in typical USMC fashion telling us kids to hang tight in case there was trouble, which we didn't doubt for a second he'd be able to take care of. Musically this is just straight ahead rock a la Springsteen.

me and my sister
scooted down beneath the window
primer grey fastback VW
kids, keep your heads down
we pull through the gate
don't brake just keep it at speed
angry faces gathered round
looking at me when I peeked

old dutch glenn man
he stayed around too
came home to his house burned down
I don't believe in coincidence
how about you
got an old rabbit gun
corner of the bedroom
box of shells under the bed
waiting is the only thing that you can do

they hired him and they paid him
so he was their man
that's just the way we are
you gotta understand
we're not the kind of people
who take to being pushed around
we'll cut ourselves to pieces man
we'll spite you till we're in the ground

Great lyrics
we'll cut ourselves to pieces man
we'll spite you till we're in the ground

Really wonderful words. A great perspective. Sounds like two verses and a middle eight. Could it have a chorus too? Or would lose the kind of ambivalence that makes this such a well-written song?

hey thanks
I appreciate the close listen and the suggestion. I tried a chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that didn't trivialize the verses. So I just removed it and it seemed to work. But I do like the idea of a chorus. I'll play with it some more after it sits or a while - sometimes that makes a difference. Now I'm going to check out your Jig tune...

Story telling
Mining the past to develop a new song - that works for me. I can see why that memory would stick with you. Sitting down and putting it into words - which means exploring it at a deeper level than just a reoccurring vivid flash memory - that's art. That third verse almost functions as a chorus the way it is.

I like the way you tell the story, and the how you develop the arrangement. Good one!

Springsteen Aside
Probably needs a chant chorus.
Maybe, "Can't keep a good man down, 'till he's in the ground." Or something.
Allow me to suggest getting a sax player to blow over the outro...
Thanks for sharing, great to have your music again.

Good story telling. I like the sparse arrangement. Agree with Warren re the two verses and a "chorus" feel. Could easily to developed further. Bit different in style for you. Good one. Thanks.
