Down around Biloxi
Pretty girls are swimmin' in the sea
Oh they all look like sisters in the ocean
The boy will fill his pale with salted water
And the storms will blow from off towards New Orleans
The Sun shines on Biloxi
The air is filled with vapors from the sea
And the boy will dig a pool beside the ocean
He sees creatures from a dream underwater
And the sun will set from off towards New Orleans
The stars can see Biloxi
The stars can find their faces in the sea
And we are walking in the evening by the ocean
We are splashing naked in the water
And the sky is red from off towards New Orleans

This song was always a favorite of mine. Brought back memories from childhood through college. I guess the leads were good because it was simple three chord and I was so familiar with it. Also cool, after playing a lot of blues, that it went to the 7chord instead of the 5th.

One of my favourite songs, too, Tom. You have done it proud. Nice guitar work. Great to hear this again. Thanks.

Thanks Peter! I knew this from the original songwriter, Jesse Winchester. Lot of great songs on that first album. Then later on Jimmy Buffet did a lot for it's popularity.

Ah Biloxi...
Spent a lot of time down there over my life. Sadly, the Biloxi of this tune is long gone, victim to the casinos long before Katrina came along.

Nice to have a little sliver of a memory brought back of being a kid on Biloxi beach staring off into the Gulf. Nicely done. Wasn't familiar with the song before. Thanks for introducing it to me.

Slot Machines and the Ferry
Joseph, From the age of 5 up to about 13, my family would drive from Baton Rouge to Destin, Florida. This was the 50's and early 60's, so there was no interstate. The drive down the Mississippi Gulf Coast was always one of my favorites. Not crowded, old Mansions, the sun and the sand. We would always stop in Biloxi to eat and my mother would play the slot machines which were right there in the restaurant. Later on a group of us from LSU went down to New Orleans and joined up with more friends and we headed across Lake Ponchatrain to sleep on the beach at Biloxi. Our own low key version of Spring Break with hideous sweet wine and beer. Rousted by the local cops at three in the morning because the big hotel we were down from didn't like us not staying with them. Then a ferry trip to one of the outer islands. Fun times!

My man!
I've never heard of Mr. Winchester, so I can't do a comparison.

This is so well played and contains some of your finest vocal work.

Very lovely Tom! (Not YOU... the song! Ha ha...)

Be well brother!

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
