Sweethearts Wait On Every Shore
Poem by Henry Lawson Music Franciscus Henri (Orient Pacific Music)BMG
She sits beside the tinted tide
that’s troubled by tortured sand;
And through the east to ocean wide,
A vessel sails from sight of land.
But she will wait and watch in vain,
For it is said in Cupid’s lore,
“that he who loved will love again,
And sweet hearts wait on every shore

Sweet Hearts
I read the poem first and wondered how you would approach this, Franc, but as soon as I listened to the first line I knew you had made sense of it all and captured the melancholy and heartache therein. Lovely work. Really like the arrangement. Perhaps the background "chant" could come up a touch and the instruments (oboe first time round?) that play over it could come down a touch. I am struggling to decipher what is being said despite several listens. Or perhaps that is intentional? Either way I like this very much. Thanks. Take care.

Thanks for your feedback
I get what you're saying...the background chorus is an old English folk song "blow the wind southerly" I had it up higher and it sort of became part of the song , which I was trying to avoid... making a reference rather than incorporating it. A hint of mystery perhaps. Truth is I spent so much time on this one I decided to launch it anyway.

Sweet Hearts
Lawson is certainly a rich vein of inspiration. Interesting sounds chosen for the backing. Beautifully warm vocal, as always! It would be interesting to do a version with just the guitar - it's short enough to be a sort of interlude. Anyway, you're getting together quite a collection of Lawson-based songs which are certainly different from the old style folkie arrangements.

thanks phil
I admit its a bit of a struggle trying to stay away from the "old folky"
the meter of the words almost demand it. I avoid his long narrative ballads because they tend to drift toward country music (not my want)The guitar interlude is very interesting concept and might consider a "take two"

Blow the wind is a haunting song
I kept it on the background as an ambience trying to capture the sense of memory and perhaps longing you write about. thanks for your comments. FH

I got to make some music now.
Thank you for sharing your work with us.
The "dissonance" in the call and response chorus here is an interesting technique.
Hopefully you will continue to find inspiration from this poet. The duo is an rewarding experience for the listener. Bravo!

Thanks Duag
Isn't great how we all inspire each other with our music?
Lawson has written a lot of stuff as I wrote to Phil above I avoid the narratives but is short reflective poems are deep and inspiring (there's that word again) FH
