The Great Wave (w Sam Dixon)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I went to an exhibition of woodblock prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai recently in Melbourne.

His most well known print is called “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” (see artwork).

Reflecting on this image (and political and meteorological upheavals round the world) led to the song.

Ideas from quotes by Shakespeare, Saint Augustine and Hugh Bonneville helped flesh out the lyrics.

Once again I turned to Sam Dixon to help fully realise the project.

And, once again, he graciously accepted the proposition :-)

Sam: Keys, organ, strings, accordion, BGVs and mix/master.
Big thanks, my friend!

Me: Song, Lead vocal, PRS Angelus acoustic guitar, G&L ASAT Special electric guitar, Gibson SG bass (tidied up a bit by Sam) and initial Logic Drummer track (tidied up a lot by Sam).

See what you think.

Thanks,

Peter

Lyrics
The Great Wave – Peter Bowen (September 2017) Capo 3

Em (add C) Cmaj7 (add C) A9 (add C) Em
Atop a lonely lighthouse
Looking out to sea
The voices of the tides
Tell their tale to me

Beyond the far horizon
The ocean’s heartbeat stirs
Clouds amass in anger
Proud provocateurs

A9 (add C) Em (add C) D/F# Em
The rise and fall of ages
Rock the ship of state
Bells toll out a warning
But has it come too (A7...) late? Em A9 D/F# Em

Upon the pebbled shoreline
Our minutes hasten fast
We wonder at the fury
But won’t learn from the past

Complacent in the eye
Our ignorance abounds
Encircled by the tempest
How many will be drowned?

C D/F# Em
The Great Wave is coming
To wash away the land
Can’t you hear the drumming?
As nature takes a stand
The Great Wave is coming
Why can't we all agree?
The Great Wave is coming
Judgement by the (A7...) sea

Lead: Em A9 D/F# Em (x2)

C D/F# Em
The Great Wave is coming
To wash away the land
Can’t you hear the drumming
Of nature’s hard rock band?
The Great Wave is coming
Why can't we all agree?
The Great Wave is coming
Judgement by the (A7...) sea Em

The Great Wave
Good one, Peter! I like the progression of ideas in the lyrics. Sam's touches are, as always, very tasteful and add power to the sections (I especially like the keys). Crisp guitar and clean solo top it off. Perhaps could do with a bigger last 4 bars? Guitar lines rather than drums? Impressive!

Hard not to get inspired
Thanks, Philip. The Hokusai exhibition was/is wonderful. Hard not to get inspired. Yes, we could have gone the rock solo ending but Sam's last organ lick was genius and I like to think that the drums and fading bass are indicative of the aftermath as the wash subsides. It was great to discuss this arrangement back and forth with Sam and hear it develop. Talk soon.

combo extraordinaire
Only one word will cover this - sophistication. So polished in it's every part from Sam's wonderful backing to the lyrics, vocals and guitars. Great that you could use one piece of art to inspire another. Kudos from my desk late at night as a cold front comes through and the chilly 50's are upon us.

Kind words
Kind words, Tom. And yes, your comment about great art acting as inspiration is perfect. Working with Sam just adds so much to the creative experience. We're glad you liked what developed. Take care.

A pleasure
as usual. This one got me to brush up on my midi chops. What I like most about doing this one is the way we talked thru the different stages and ended up with something we both liked. Best way to collaborate, I feel.

Vision to reality
Thanks, Sam. Yes, I had a vision for the song but only after discussing and working through things with you, and calling on your many skills, was it able to be articulated. Hopefully there will be many more. Take care. Talk soon.

Lovely work.
I love this, the tuneful backing, the mix, the vocals and the guitar work. I also love the way the vocal is mixed right up front, with little ambience. This gives the voice a more immediate, intimate feel to it, and makes it easier to feel that the singer is in my living room. A very emotional vocal performance and excellent work by all concerned. Once again thanks for the download and all involved should be proud of their contributions.

Water damage...
Thanks, FA. Very kind words. Hopefully there wasn't too much water damage in your living room :-) We really appreciate the honour of the download. Take care.

Luckily...
Thanks, Franc. Yeah, Hokusai blew me away. I really liked his work. I figured if I can't get inspired by artwork like "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" there is no hope for me. Luckily something popped up. Having Sam on board made it more special. Judy and I are planning to head back to Japan in Feb/March next year :-) Take care.

Nautical bent...
Thanks, Vic. Your comment re "a picture paints a thousand words" made me think immediately of "the face that launched a thousand ships" line about Helen of Troy from Dr. Faustus! Given my nautical bent there could be a song in there somewhere :-) Having Sam aboard is the best decision any captain could make. We're glad you liked what eventuated. Take care.

Somewhere around here...
...is a photo of my son in front of one of the Great Wave prints...I've always loved that image...

I love the acoustic guitar playing...you got a really nice tone out of the Angelus... I like your vocals on this as well...

I builds nicely, too...

Iconic
Thanks, Ed. It is such an iconic image. A worthy backdrop for a cherished family member, no doubt. Sam and I appreciate your kind words. The Marylands-made Angelus is a seriously good acoustic guitar and I am fortunate to have intersected with it at a stage in my life when I could afford it :-) Sam and I talked through the "building" aspect a number of times to get it to this stage and I had a smile on my face the whole track when he sent me through this final version. Take care.

Great wave
I love the full arrangement of this. The basics are all there, and then you have a cello and string section; high quality samples I assume? Immediately after the (great) guitar solo there is something chorus-like, which is a bit much. But really, good stuff.

Thanks
Thanks, Vic. I'm not sure what Sam used for the cello, et. al. I was impressed how they sounded, though. The organ comes back in after the solo but I'm not really picking up a chorus-like effect you refer to. Again, Sam might know. We appreciate your support. Take care.

I like
it when inspiration comes together from an experience. Sam can play a big part. love the violin when it comes in. Has a 60's instructional feel. The arrangement get bigger and bigger. The wave of sound fits well with the topic. Dire staits picking in the middle. Really enjoyed natures hard rock band.

Build up
Thanks, Tim. Yeah, I wanted the arrangement to develop into full flow and Sam's adds works wonders to that end. Nature'e hard rock band is a line I like, too. Glad you liked what we put together. Take care.

Back and forthed... (is there such a word?)
Thanks, Dick. It is such a powerful image that we needed to make sure we did it justice, I agree. Sam and I back and forthed a fair bit over this one and we appreciate kind words. Thanks for the kudos re the lyrics, too. Take care.
