Silk and Honey

Description
This song isn't about anyone in particular - just a series of images and reflections. I tried to keep the backing fairly simple, but there are nevertheless a few guitars in there. The main ones are two Matons - an FG100 (tuned DADGAD, capo 2nd fret) on the left and a Southern Star on the right (capo 7th fret).

The vocal chorus was added by Peter Thorneycroft and Michael Otway - two schoolfriends who were kind enough to help out. There's also a software instrument vocal chorus in there to fill it all out.

The photo, which looks along the Rue de Rivoli, Paris, was taken from a balcony in the Hotel de Nice. I stayed there for a few nights in 2015.

I hope you like the song!

Lyrics
Silk and Honey

I hope that you are happy because sometimes you were not
I hope your curiosity abounds
And you can hear the music that is playing in your soul
Aware of silk and honey in the sounds

I picture you in Paris as the sun begins to set
On a balcony in the Hotel de Nice
Along the Rue de Rivoli the lights begin to shine
And there your heart seemed finally at peace

Did you find the path wanted?
Did you find someone who cares?
Have you become who you would want to be?
Is your hair still long and silky
Are your eyes alive with life?
Are you still intrigued by all that you can see?

The years we were together seem just a week or two
The hours are now minutes that rushed by
The memories dance and flutter like some dust in morning sun
When you were gone I couldn’t say goodbye

Instrumental

Did you find the path wanted?
Did you find someone who cares?
Have you become who you would want to be?
Do you have that battered mandolin
You bought upon a whim
Or the jacket with the stars along the sleeve?

I hope that you are happy because sometimes you were not
I hope your curiosity abounds
And you can hear the music that is playing in your soul
Aware of silk and honey in the sounds

Coda

I hope that you are happy, and have found someone who cares
And they can hear the music in your soul.

Silk and Honey
I logged onto MJ then started playing guitar and forgot I was online. This snuck on while I was noodling. Happy to find it when I came back. A gentle, poignant song. Guitars sound great. An articulate, warm vocal, as always. The BGVs work really well. Great song title, too. Well done. Thanks. Talk soon.

I tried to keep the recording simple with the guitars this time - not much added to them (an Ozone acoustic guitar setting was all). The chorus was Thorn's idea and that worked out well!

Lovely acoustic blend...
The picking left and right is sparkly and full...

The silk and honey image or metaphor is a nice one...

Almost
ethereal. I say "almost" because there's too much depth to be absolute. The song feels like a warm blanket.

The guitars are the same make, but different models, strings, tunings and capo positions - I was pleased with the unity but complementary sounds. Glad you liked the backing vocals, too! Thanks for the comments, Vic - much appreciated!

Rich guitar...
Beautiful, poignant song that you present with simplicity and purity and such a mellow general sound that is uncluttered by extraneous orchestration. It's really quite magical that such tender memories can be presented in such an unpretentiously beautiful way. Lovely song.

Silk
This reminds me of a Dylan song. Not sure why.

And it seems to me that there is a split second difference between the two guitar parts. Not so much in accurate playing as probably an alignment problem in your recording software.

Otherwise enjoyed.

Thanks
Thanks for stopping by, Vic - much appreciated. I'll go back and have a listen to just the two guitars to check out the alignment. My first guess would be that the playing can drift a little, but if it's consistent it could be a latency issue...
