Lyrics
PAINKILLER [Buckley/Smith]
A handful of ‘ludes
that should do it
Washed down with whiskey
And just say “screw it”
Whatever it takes to ease the strain
Whatever it takes to kill the pain

They met online
had dinner together
He followed her home
And tried to rape her
She managed to escape with her dignity intact
But to kill the pain - she’ll need help with that

I lost my job a while ago
My new vocation is poppin’
prescription fentanyl
Whatever it takes to ease the strain
Whatever it takes to kill the pain

I ain't been laid in a month of Sundays
I met a woman who agreed to swap sex for cash
Whatever it takes to ease the strain
Whatever it takes to kill the pain

Yes - I can relate
I love the extended middle instrumental section - and of course - there is nothing quite like your exceptional lyrics and vocals.

Universal subject
The only thing exceptional is that sometimes I manage to keep everything in tune. Pain - that's universal, and what's here got cut down from twice as many verses.

Never
a dull moment. I wonder how Primus would handle a cover of one of your tunes.

Ways and Means
I'm trying to wrap my head around the Primus version. Loud, slow, ponderous? There are so many different ways to do a song (as your recent vintage jazz number so aptly demonstrates).

A little bleaker than normal
but still that Smith sound which seems to subvert the subject matter.

Interesting stuff.

Cheers

Dick

Painkiller
Another fine tune Warren. I have noticed more gritty realism creeping into your lyrics of late. Thanks for all of the great songs that you post here. All the best for 2018. Cheers, Dean
