Dream Of A Shadow

Description
Here is a new philosophical folk-rocker.

The concept is inspired by a passage from the ancient Greek poet Pindar. It is quoted---albeit slightly paraphrased---in the mid-section of the song, at the beginning of the Latin/Jazz-tinged interlude.

I sing, play bass, acoustic and electric guitars, and organ.

Except for the mid-section---which employs modified midi loops provided by Logic Pro X---the drums are modified midi loops from groovemonkee.com's “Rock Essentials 1” kit. All the midi drums were run through the Logic Pro X “SoCal+” setting.

Hope some of you can enjoy this.

Lyrics
DREAM OF A SHADOW

I
When I open my eyes,
and see you lying next to me;
then I stop and reflect,
how good this life has been to me.

I've got no time for empty regret...
I must seize this moment
---accept it as a gift!

II
Remembering days of my youth;
---it was a long long time ago.
They don't seem real to me now;
more like a moving picture show.

Moments slip through my fingers,
can't hold them in my grip.
They run out on the ground,
like flour through a sieve!

CHORUS:
Inside we know the score;
---been down this road before.
It's not our first rodeo.

The day is drawing near.
The truth will shine so clear.
It's not our last rodeo...Oh...Oh...

Bridge:
“Brief is the space of time
in which the happiness of mortals blossoms.
Even so, it falls to the ground
when stricken by adverse doom.
Creatures of a day”
---That's what we are!
“Creatures of a day....
[just] the dream of a shadow.”

III
Old death waits 'round the corner,
with rebirth not that far off.
Some folks just strike out blindly.
Other folks choose to scoff.

Me, I'll give my self to love,
come what may.
And when it's time again to leave,
I'll turn and face the day!

IV
When I open my eyes,
and see you lying next to me;
then I stop and reflect
how good this life has been to me.

Got no time for empty regret...
I must seize this moment
---accept it as a gift!

CHORUS:
Inside we know the score;
---been down this road before.
It's not our first rodeo.

The day is drawing near.
The truth will shine so clear.
It's not our last rodeo...Oh...

*Pindar, PYTHIAN ODES VIII, lines 92-98.

Thanks Charlie!
I love the MB too. But the similarity is unintentional. Probably leakage from my subconscious. Ha ha...

Be well friend!

Dream Of A Shadow
It certainly evokes a particular period of musical history that many of us lived through. Impressive song and fine performance, Michael. The quality of recording and production show its contemporary origins. Drums are sounding particularly good. Well done. Thanks.

Add some harmonies and Hayward lead guitar, and bongo! I mean bingo, of course. I like the breakdown very much.

Good call
re the middle breakdown Vic! Originally this progression WAS intended to be developed into separate tune, but I couldn't come up with a decent break for this one so I fused the two.

Be well bro!
