Lyrics
Cowboy Tom Buckles Down That Hatch

Time to hang that saddle up
It's too slow for this ride
But I'll keep my holster on
I like it by my side

Guess I'll hea d to Jesse's bar
and have myself a seat
Pearly Mae sits two stools down
Still the local leech

And like that cowboy on the radio
I've been shot up and been shot down
Better light another smoke
Time to find myself another town

Got this two-bit rocket ship
But I ain't got no fuel
Spoke to Reverend Massey Joe
And he told me what to do

He said, "Son get on that big tin can,
And buckle down the hatch"
Guess I'll say my goodbye now
Cause I ain't comin' back

And like that cowboy on the radio
Following that railroad trail
Better light myself another smoke
Time to take this thing to outer space...

Now hand me down my cane, boy
Glad you stayed to hear
Way too far past midnight
in this stratosphere

I won't be here tomorrow
Found another path
don't you feel no sorrow
when I buckle down that hatch

Cowboy Tom
nothing cool like a space cowboy tune, best thing since major tom. imaginative structure in the composition. and executed nicely!

I wanted
to try for mono synth-ish sounds for the backdrop. I've had those free U-he synths forever and decided to put them to use for a change.

Spooky
I like the horseback rhythm, and I love the tremolo guitar. Weirdly, the synths conjure up cactus and tumbleweed in my imagination.

Sometimes
there's a slight advantage to not knowing what you're doing. I just picked sounds and started playing keys. Then tried to make something cohesive from the mess.

This Is So Unusual That...
... if I were you, I would look for a way to get this to the people who produce AMC's "Preacher."
This tune has that uniquely mysterious, off-kilter vibe that I believe would fit very well somewhere in their bizarre story line.

Sammy, The Space Cowboy. Who knew? ;)

I've never
heard of that show, so I googled. I have to say it would make quite a match!

Brilliant
Loved the other-worldly feel and how the acoustic works with the synths.
And you sneak a a bit of Morricone style guitar in as well.

Definitely a keeper!

Cheers

I was
really surprised when Mark (on chorus vocs) agreed to sing with me on this. He's from Texas and I've heard and liked his country flavored songs and accent. After coming up with this, I heard his 'twang' all over it in my head. I'm from Georgia, but I just don't sound country enough. I emailed him and he seemed to really like it, and even took a day off to complete the vocs to replace my originals (which I totally hated). Maybe that Morricone guitar sold him.

personally
percussion introduction = smooth singing - entranced when the refrain comes along to subdominant Major, then minor - so smooth - my kinda stuff

I think
that organ was about the oddest part in this. I wanted it to start out "smiling" then morph into a sadistic frown. Thx Scott.

Sound track
Yep. JA Stewart is correct in pointing out that this is the kind of thing that some of the newer TV shows play in the background. Appropriately off the beaten path, but still happily listenable. Very creative.

Cowboy Tom
Had me off in a trance, Sam. So much interesting stuff going on but the mix makes it all seem believable. Plenty of creative inspiration, for sure. Great to hear Mark around the place, too. Weird. Other worldly. But way cool! Thanks, guys. Been AWOL but back in the saddle. Talk soon.

I really like this!
Only thing that occurs to me Sam is the singers feel like all backing vocalists? Not that's a bad thing. I just found myself waiting for a lead vocalist to break in there. It's like a sing along. Very eclectic mix! I am planning a good smoke and then listen again with the phones. Cool p-delic lyrics.

Acutally
I did all the original vocals with the chorus just a single lead voice like you were expecting. But I *really* disliked it, and wanted somebody else, preferably with more of a Southern twang. We've talked on the phone, so you know my speaking voice, which being Georgian, has to have some Southern qualities, but it's not strong at all. Mark did the job just right.

re:southern voice
Yes well you make the calls. I think the southern voice out front would sound good. It sounds good as is. Just something my conciousness was looking for. I have some songs that need your harmonies if and when you are interested. Lemme know.

Well
my VA doctor says it's about time for my first colonoscopy, so I may be a little "incapacitated" for a cupla weeks. NOT looking forward to it. This year is (was) time for all my physicals and blood tests. I passed everything and all is fine, and this is the last thing. Uhg. Ever had one? Is it painful as well as 'inconvenient'?
Mail me a copy anyway, I'd like to hear it.

kind of reminds me of the last series of star trek
It was set during the earlier part of exploration before the first and original. The engineer had a rough neck cowboy demeanor. He ended up hitching it up with the Vulcan onboard and they had a baby named Mr. Spock, after the series though. Really cool synth and the acoustic fits perfectly. Nice vocal to compliment it all.

It's been a while since I have listened to one of your musical adventures. This is so original. You have blues and gospel roots mixed with a world music vibe and some incredible sounds/nuances ... primal haunting and creative, Brew is perfect.... Great stuff Sammy. You are a creative soul.

Space Cowboy
The initial two listens didn't do much for me, but then the third time was a charm as it just sucked me in and took me along for the rocket ride. I think part of the delayed response is I was listening casually and the lead vocals aren't upfront telling the story, which is the only critical feedback I have for you because I think this is a fantastic piece of music. I love how you have taken a catchy simple melody and zoomed it into the stratosphere. Don't shy away from articulating a good story just because you are not happy the way your voice sounds. It's likely that listeners won't be as judgmental and a good story will carry the weight : )

synths
That's pretty subtle. You still have mostly a guitar track here. But some tasteful sprinkling of synths works fine for this type of song.

Who wrote the lyrics?
I like the whole song. The lyrics are very cool. I know those synths you are using, they are from u-he. They have some really cool stuff but I seldom monkey with them. Really nice Sammy.
