Description
Featuring...

And introducing...

Dan Knudsen: Baritone guitar played in open A with a capo on the 3rd fret (left channel).

------------

MIKE: The view from Ground Zero... Not more than 15 feet from the initial flashpoint! I've been telling this tale to family and friends for 47 years now. (I had turned 18 only two months before this event.) It's about time I committed it to song.

NOT a sweeping condemnation of our boys in blue. I've known too many, and have the deepest respect for them and what they do. Nevertheless, there's always a rotten few in the barrel, and things like this do happen now and again; and when they do, they're all too often swept under the rug. I do NOT wish to give the impression that I in any way subscribe to the anti-authoritarianism promoted by today's leftist extremists.

Finally, heartfelt thanks to my dear friend DAN KNUDSEN for deigning to collaborate with me on this one.

Oh, and big damn thanks to VIC HOLMAN for his input in the early stages of this project!

:-)

DAN: “Five chords and the truth!”

Lyrics
BIG DAMN LIE (Ballad Of Red Rocks)

I
Oh... I was there at Red Rocks in '71,
and I saw the whole deal go down.
I was one of the many came to see the show,
and the good folks there on the grounds.

I came to hang with my brothers and sisters,
and to groove on Tull's rockin' sound.

II
Well the police showed like an occupying force;
on the peaceful crowd they did descend.
They had tear-gas, pepper-gas, dogs and clubs.
Trouble clearly was their intent!

No they weren't there to protect and serve.
It seemed like they were Hades sent!

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
are factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

III
The police they were so belligerent;
---started pushin' concert-goers around.
They were herding us like cattle into smaller groups,
creating arbitrary bounds.

Yeah, they were separating friends and lovers,
with their arbitrary bounds.

IV
Well one young girl got cut off
from the friends who brought her to the affair.
She was scared and cryin', and she begged the cops
to let her please cross over there...

The police just laughed and told her “NO!”
They said: “Listen girl, don't you dare!”
Well she panicked and she went for it anyway,
they sicked the dogs all over her!

Then the crowd rose up in her defense,
and it all went south from there!

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
are factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Guitar!

V
Well I somehow managed to get inside
to safety as I did suppose.
But the cops fired gas into the amphitheater
on the innocents watching the show!

As I struggled to breathe with my lungs on fire,
there was one thing that I wanted to know:
Why a force sworn to protect and serve
turned a party into a war zone?

VI
I recently discovered the “official” account
while surfing on the internet.
It put all the blame on that crowd of kids;
absolved the officers of all guilt.

Well it filled my heart with sadness.
The same stuff still happens today;
and the facts about government-sanctioned evil
tend to get swept away...

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
get factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers...
take the fall.

Channeling John Fogerty
Raw and passionate Mike.

Quite a story and I found a few articles about it. Infamous....

It must have been pretty scary.

Cheers

Well Mike...
I'm not sure about the "gorgeous" vocals. They make me cringe in places. But one does what one can, right?

Glad you enjoyed this one!

Comments please...
Must be the holidays and lack of time.

I should have waited till after New Years to post this tune.

But when you sit on a story like this for so long it's hard to be patient.

Big damn thanks Vicar!
You know, I've already remixed this thing. Cleaned up the vox, re-eq'd the bass, and given it a general overhaul. I plan to run it through a great remastering program that Dan has and eventually repost.

Thanks for the kind words my friend!
