Description
The last song in the Distant England collection. Distant England is now officially complete

A paean to an country which never really existed but many still think it did and want to return to it.

Lyrics and melody : Graeme Hobbs
Arrangement and production : me
Vocals; Samantha Dixon

I'm Britain in bloom on a hill in a valley
I'm Britain in Bloom bluebell wood where you dally
I'm Britain in bloom by a stream on a river
For now and forever I'm Britain in Bloom

I'm Britain in bloom, tied to the strings of your apron
I'm Britain in bloom, like some Carry On matron
Wrapped in your arms I could sleep like a baby, and never wake maybe
I'm Britain in Bloom

I'm Britain in bloom, where they say Shakespear once slept
I'm Britain in bloom, in a village that's well kept
The bard and the banned, let those cuckoos be damned, building castles of sand
I'm Britain in Bloom

I'm Britain in bloom, over the rooftops of London
Along the sea front in Brighton
I'm Britain in bloom down the streets of Doncaster, I'll never forget her
when she was in bloom

I'm Britain in bloom, I'm begging your pardon
I'm Britain in bloom, in a quaint cottage garden
You must stay for tea, give up your seat for a lady, tree lined and shady
Forever Britain in Bloom

Village green bowled me over, across the white cliffs of Dover
far out cross the sea

Great progression
Nice key change and escalation of instruments. A lovely unironic celebration of some of the good things about the UK. At least, I think it's unironic.

Thanks Graham!
It turned out to be quite difficult to maintain interest as it's only one melody, no chorus or bridge.

So tried to get each section slightly different from the previous one and changing key helped as well.

I'm not sure it is un-ironic. I think you can read it any way you want. It's not really an England that existed but it's one people like to think did.

Thanks for the listen and comment.

Britain in Bloom
Lovely! Sweet, emotive, old-fashioned vocal. Nice flow to the melody. Supportive backing that has interesting variety both in instrumentation and harmonies.Once Brexit is done this is what everyone will be doing - Top 40, I'd say.

It's what Brexit is all about for many people
A yearning for a country that never really existed.

Thanks for the comments on the instrumentation. It took me some while to put it all together and even now I'm still thinking of other changes I could have made!

Fab! Thanks for sharing this work with us here. That gal is wonderful, soulful, righteous and without affectation. Don't let her get away!
You will be getting rung up by the Stickie Bun Society behind this, amazingly well done Sir!

Stickie buns
I haven't had one for years :(

Thanks Mr D. Sam is the best singer I've ever worked with. She's also a very fine musician and used to play a mean accordion in our old band.

Your comments are much appreciated!

a deisgn for life
A great arrangements and I like the additions of the bells for London and the wurlitzer organ for Brighton. Very evocative. I think post war Britain in the 50's had an idea of the Britain you mean of 'garden cities and places like Port Sunlight where workers would be close to their place of work near to their little piece of clean cultivated English countryside built around their homes, Song aptures the images brilliantly. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Garden cities and new towns. There was a place near us in Essex called Batatown where the employees of the Bata shoe factory were housed. They created what folks hoped would be a new utopia. I lived in Basildon New Town. It must have been like paradise when people first moved there from the slums of East London. Lots of space, indoor bathrooms and good sized gardens. A pity it morphed into something far less attractive.

There is an idea amongst some that Britain of the 50s was the glowing, rosy tinted country Graeme alluded to in the song. In reality it was a tough place to be. Poor housing, low wages and austerity.

The problem I see with people who have the wrong idea is that they were either not alive or too young to remember and get their memories from old films or TV shows.

Many thanks for the listen and the comments!

Cheers

Dick

this is very nice
i went to see mary poppins 2 on xmas day - this could have been lifted straight from the soundtrack

i was also in the UK for 3 weeks just prior to that - i didnt recognise the place, dirty, grimy - full of seething hatred and division among my family and friends - nothing like the nostalgia that this tune conveys - i was very sad to see what has happened to the 'united' kingdom

hopefully Britain will bloom again one day

nice work Dick

Mary Poppins?
There is a certain feeling of unreality about that.

The Uk is not in the best of states at the moment. So much division and the Putin's puppets on the far right are extracting all they can from it.

We were never that united but even less sonow.

Yes, I hope it does settle down but we need proper leaders and we don't have them.

Thanks for the listen and comment Bryn, much appreciated.

Paean To The Past
I believe at this particular point in our history we all yearn for a simpler, less tumultuous time.

This piece is a lovely representation of that idyllic Past, when at least in our remembrances and imaginings, things seemed to make sense.

It's a lovely piece all-round, from the sentimental lyric, to the lush arrangement, to Samantha's wistful vocal performance.

In my (arranger) mind, the only things missing are, perhaps, an accordion section and a sing-along section, where we could all join in the lament... to Better Times.

Kudos to all on a lovely job. ;)

We do indeed Joe
simpler times.

Were there any smpler times really I wonder?

I like the point about remembrances and making sense. It's a yearning for something that never really existed but we desperately want it to have been like that.

Thanks for the insightful comments Joe, much appreciated.

There is an accordian in there but you're right, I missed out on the sing-along!

White cliffs
The British seem to have a particular kind of nostalgia for the real Britain. Your tune presents it very well. Even though I wouldn't immediately call the instrumentation quintessentially British, but I'm probably just not catching the reference.

Thanks Vic!
I listened to a lot of what is termed Bristish Light Musicto get an idea of the kind of instrumentation they used then added various sounds for added interest (like the fairground organ)

We do "suffer" from a false nostalgia. Mostly from the older generation who don't want to remember the real hardships of the post war years and would rather fall back on the films and songs of the period.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Cheers

My mum .....
would have totally loved this. Love the instrumentation and Samantha's vocal is superb. Lulls one into a false sense of nostalgic security while heading for the Brexit precipice. Just what's required really. Is that Phil The Greek's car horn going off at the end? :)
Very enjoyable Dick .............. if a tad sad.

False sense?
That just about sums it up Neil.

I have a horrible feeling there are going to be some very shocked and angry folks when Project Fear becomes Project Reality.

I'm not sure Phil knows how to use his horn. Someone else would probably do it for him.

Thanks for the comments Neil.
