STARLIGHT

Description
About a month ago my brother Tom sent me a CD of instrumental jazz-rock jams. Whereas my roots are in rock and folk, his are in rock and jazz. This makes collaborating with him a bit of a challenge for me.

Be that as it may, a piece called STARLIGHT spoke to me on first hearing. I decided, with Tom's permission, to make it into a song. This took some editing and rearranging of his individual tracks (which he promptly supplied) before I had a workable structure to sing and play guitar and bass over; the original being an extended jazz-rock vamp. (He excels at such things!)

At a whopping 19 tracks the tune was a bear to mix!!! (I'm still thinking of playing with the tone of the bass some more, and perhaps re-doing the vocal.)

So here it is. Another instance of “sibling revelry” from me and my bro. A bit of a departure from what I usually do; it's a tad prog...a tad psychedelic. As there is no genre here for PROG-O-DELIC, I have chosen ROCK.

;-)

Thomas Wark: Original concept & synth (drums, percussion, xylophone, and strings.)
Micheal Wark: Final arrangement, lyrics, vocals, guitars, bass, and sound effects.

Now... let's get COSMIC!

Lyrics
STARLIGHT

I
When the sun goes down,
and the darkness falls;
an ethereal hush,
washes over all.

It is then the Lord
of the empyrean,
on cosmic canvas He
displays His artistry.

Refrains:
My friends, have you SEEN
the starlight?

Have you...REALLY seen...
the starlight?

CAN you grasp the meaning
in the starlight?

II
What a masterpiece!
What a grand design!
It evokes in me
a sense of the Divine.

And the pow'r and wisdom
that through it does shine;
holds a meaning clear,
before an open mind.

Refrains:
My friends, have you SEEN
the starlight?

Have you...REALLY seen...
the starlight?

WILL you grasp the meaning
of the starlight?

SEE!!!

1966 Sparkle!
Can't do any better can ya? Lol! If the '66 being intoned does not work for you as high praise... the bar is high here at MJ isn't it? Let see what the plumbers can do lol, they got samples and effects... BTW the bass on here works really well.

66?
Not going for a particular time period. Just trying to do justice to what Tom sent me. I still think the bass---at least in places---needs a bit more definition.

The guitar tone was a happy accident. The title already settled I went looking for a suitable voice for the guitar and stumbled on "starlit cavern" among the Logic Pro plug-ins. YUMMY! After that the guitar parts just seemed to flow quite naturally.

Glad you enjoyed this one my canine friend!

Co-incidentally
I started a new song a few days ago which is driven by that patch.

This is great Mike. Lots of interesting textures and changes. Love the psychedelic ending.

Gary Moore's first band, Skid Row, used bass following vocal in the early 70s and it's really effective. Unfortunately I can't find the track they use it on but you might enjoy this track from the album. A 17 year old Gary Moore https://youtu.be/gD_4DLgCv78

PROG-O-DELIC is perfect btw :)

Cheers

Dick

a Gary Moore fan, although I prefer his later stuff. What a GIANT! R.I.P.

Very good
I always enjoys marimba/vibes and you make great use of them here. I don't think 19 tracks is so bad, though I do try and whittle it down to 8 or so in Mixbus (BLATANT AD), which handles 20 tracks on my aged iMac better than Logic or GB. Back to the track. There's a Santana vibe that I like very much. Also, check out Gong's Shamal, which this recalls.

My brother Tom
is the drummer/percussionist on this, and when I got to those "conga" sections I just couldn't help emulating ol' Carlos just a little. Good call Graham!

19 tracks is a lot for me. WALKIN' used only seven. But one must be willing to push the envelope if one is to grow, and that's what we're here for right?

Take care man!

Great sound throughout. Love that driving staccato and lead guitar. You and your bro need to team up more often. Cheers.

Have I =really= seen it?
Come to think of it ... no, I guess I never really have.   Thanks for enlightening all of us.

This expertly-arranged piece has a wonderful mixture of musical textures and instruments.   Many of them, entirely on their own merits, “very exotic.”   Masterfully done, start to finish.

Cosmic indeed
I sure like the direction your music has taken lately, and this got to be one of my top favorites of yours. The music is really out there and your singing is getting better for each new song, more confidant perhaps?

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Thank you H!
I hope to do more collabs with Tom.

As for the rest of my stuff, I don't want to do the same kind of thing over and over. One can maintain a signature style without having to be stuck in a creative rut.

Been experimenting more with alternate tunings of late. It will be interesting to see where that leads.

Thanks again for listening and commenting my friend.

Be well!

tones galore
The textures in this piece provide the ear with many things to focus on. The arrangement keeps my focus with the tweaks you include in the instrumentation. Guitar work is sweet.
