So Far Away (1982 Track 7 - 2019 RPM Challenge)

Get Flash to see this player.

The seventh track from my 2019 RPM Challenge "album" 1982. In retrospect, it almost seemed like the goal of so many influences of my teenage years was simply to scare the hell out of me in order to get me to behave a certain way. This wasn't coming from parents or family, but from school, church, the news - just everywhere. It seemed to kind of permeate everything around. Getting out from under all of that always seemed like I was moving toward a horizon I'd never actually reach.

Reminds me a little bit of how things are today.

So, I wrapped all of that into a nice, bouncy synthpop song.

As for the project itself, I decided to do an early 80s synth pop homage for this year's challenge, which was a lot of fun to put together. I even had fun making the artwork for the project. The idea was, it's 1982 and you're in your favorite mall browsing Camelot Music or Sam Goody and there it is in all it's XDR cassette goodness.

While it's all synth (no guitars), I did jump around a little stylistically and maybe borrowed some sounds and styles from a little later than 1982. But, I've reached the point in my life where the music of my youth has all blurred together, so it's at least authentic to my hazy memories.

As for the title of the project, 1982 was a big year for me. I turned 15, was a freshman in high school and got my driver's license. All big deals when you're growing up.

So Far Away
©2019 Joseph Gurner

Storms gather in the distance
My heart races in fear
So many voices so insistent
Saying the end is near

Life keeps on moving
Tomorrow turns into yesterday
I see the horizon
and it seems So far away

Sundays underneath the steeple
Trying to understand my sin
Venom pumped into the people
Killing my heart again

My thoughts keep on moving
Creating a world where I can’t stay
Horizons draw nearer
Still they seem so far away

Watching the sunrise in the morning
My eyes open for the very first time
The world is still turning
A new day starts to shine

I keep on moving
Walking the path from day to day
I’ve reached the horizon
And the new one seems so far away
