Autumn Song

Description
This arose out of my ambition to write a Burt Bacharach style pop song. I wrote and recorded last autumn, but struggled to get the mix right and gave up on it until tonight. I am still learning and really appreciate feedback - including negative.

Lyrics

the mist on the window
keeps the rainy street from view
and all the people flowing by

it may be nothing
i just remember we were there
maybe something
about the soft light in your hair

being with you
falling for you

the bags in the hallway
say we’re only passing thru
two more people flowing by

its all as nothing
we wont remember these silly cares
its really something
to hear your footsteps on the stairs

sitting with you
living with you

ahh spring has passed, summer too.
mellow fruit we still have
winter’s all i’d have without you

life is always changing
its just rearranging
our deckchairs in the rain

Very nice,....
Really loved this, I love jazz, so many different colors you add nicely to the lyrics with the guitar. Such a nice feel, ready for this Spring!

Thank you
working on your own makes progressing rather hard. in a group someone will hopefully tell you when your work's only so so!

True...
but often what's "so and so" is a rather subjective judgement. Still, constructive feedback during the recording and/or mixing process can be a real help. Sometimes I send a preliminary mix to another MJer for critique.

Stylish and Impressive!
The backer is sweet. The bass line and guitar work together. You made some great choices to drop instruments in and out. The guitar solo is tasty and filling. That in itself put the bar higher. On the tag there was an opportunity to bring back the guitar for an outro.
So how to make this better? The idea might be to compress the vocal. This will make the loud sounds a bit softer and raise the soft sounds in the mix. You would get a stronger vocal track. It might take three compressors and several eq to get that done. Watch some vids on this and steal the ideas.
There are several pitch challenges in the vocal that do not sooth my ear. This normally happens at the end of the lines when the singer is running out of breath.
The vocal apparatus literally squeezes down to accommodate the dwindling air supply and the pitch of the voice goes sharp. Try auto tune. Try singing half a line at a time.
I make up stuff all at once, including lyrics on the fly, and don't go backwards, but you can make a scratch vocal and figure out how your going to sing the lines in advance of a final recording.
Plenty of vocalists map their breathing, determine their final phrasing and prefect their pronouncement of the keywords after the scratch vocal is finished. If you are going after Bert B you should adopt his techniques.
Now by way of example. Listen to Billy Holiday and Jo Stafford reading jazz classics. I have been present during recording sessions where hours were wasted changing the pronunciation of single words back and forth in an effort to please the client.
One more? Sing the vowels, talk the harder sounds. This may not make a lot of sense but if you work in the area of vocals for very long you will come to this idea eventually...
Keep working!

Thank you so much Daug
So much good advice, which I will certainly follow. So good of you to take so much time and trouble. Thank you again for the encouragement.
