Summer Of Your Love

Description
I turned 66 on April 22nd. Been looking back over the decades. I first wrote and recorded this around 2010 I think.

It was originally conceived as a love song, but I just couldn't make that work. So I decided on a deeper theme and re-wrote and re-sung the lyrics. But the old mix was simply wretched! So---after a brief posting back in the day---it was taken down and shelved.

Anyway, I've added some new midi drum tracks, a little more synth in a couple of spots; and have given the piece a thorough remixing.

I'm afraid this intensely personal tune defies strict genre categories. It is a ballad with elements of psychedelia (given the excesses of my youth), and even some hard rock (in the mid-section). So I have opted for BALLAD for want of anything better.

My spiritual autobiography in outline. Hope some of you can appreciate this one...

Lyrics
SUMMER OF YOUR LOVE

I
In the summer of Your love
when I was just nineteen
You came into my life
You came and you set me free

You shined a holy light
into the deep dark cold inside
and with no hiding places left
You saved me from myself

II
In the summer of Your love
I became grateful
You breathed upon my heart
a desire to be faithful

Before the worlds were made
---Your plan already laid.
I would never have chosen You Lord,
if left to myself.

Bridge:
With nothing of value to trade,
my heart and hands were empty.
The dawning of your grace,
remains a mystery;
born of eternity...
Lord!

III
In the winter of my lifetime
Your summer sun's still shining.
Heaven's smile, it beckons now.
Soon I with You will be dining.

No fears and no regrets
will stifle these tears of joy.
Jesus You are my GOD!
I'm Yours forever more.

Thanks KC!
I was 19 in 1972... The music deliberately harks back to that era. Seemed the right thing to do...

Really
like the unexpected chord changes. Stuff like that is the best attention holder.

Hey Sammy!
This piece is a tad paradoxical to be sure. But so was the experience the song relates. Always happy to hold your attention for a spell...

What Narad said
The subject may sometimes end up in somewhat cheesy songs but this is pretty much as good as it gets :-) Good singing (for a 66 year old, hehe - well I can't sing at all and I am yet to turn 56) and a nice build!

Thanks for sharing and take care,
Henke

Hey Henke...
It is tricky to write about this stuff without falling into frayed cliches. I hope I managed to avoid that pitfall here.

Many thanks for the vocal props. Sometimes I'm good... other times I suck. That's life!

Tim!
Yeah, I'm kinda proud of the guitar work in this one. It's probably the main reason I dug it out of the mothballs for a remix. The old mix didn't do it justice at all.

I appreciate the kind words my friend!

Cool Vibe
Love the expression and movement. Your voice has a Keith Emerson a la Lucky Man quality. Great.

Hi Roy!
I'm pretty sure it was Greg Lake that sang on Lucky Man. But I appreciate the props nonetheless.

Be well friend!

Dare(?!?) I offer a suggestion?
“First of all, hey, this is great!”

But – if I might offer a technical suggestion anyway – I do think that, in the present mix, the instrumentals entirely overwhelm the vocals.   Indeed, to my ears, they are so “face forward” that there is absolutely nowhere for the vocals to go.

“Maybe the instrumentals are trying too hard.”   Maybe they should just soften-up and relax, so that, when the vocalist does come in, he can take the lead.   I think that this will yield a more-balanced outcome without robbing the piece of its considerable impact.

It's not a bad or unwelcome suggestion.
I'll have to hear it on our house stereo. Perhaps the vocal does have to come forward a tad.

Glad you liked this one!

Psychedelic indeed
Could have been straight out of 1969.

The changes work well and despite their incongruity they don't seem at all out of place.

Cheers

Dick

Not 69... but 72 actually...
Close enough though, right?

The incongruity is, of course, quite deliberate. The experience was intensely paradoxical... like a cool breeze and simultaneous roaring thunder! I tried to capture that as best I could.

Thanks for listening and commenting my friend!
