Description
This little ditty is a happy result of further experimentation in DGDGGD tuning. I applied it on the rhythm guitar, which was first recorded acoustic and then electrified.

Been also itching to work with piano more, and this seemed like a good vehicle for that.

Originally posted this one on the 3rd; but soon realized that the mix was nowhere near up to snuff and took it down two days later. I then went to work balancing out the mix some more, and correcting a couple of seriously flat vocals.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it now, so away we go...

Enjoy!

Lyrics
RUNNER

I
He stands at the starting line,
---he's in full alert,
but he's feelin' fine!

Waiting for the sound of the gun,
when he's off the blocks;
---heading down the line!

He's not running for the usual reasons, like
mere competition or strife.
He's not runnin' for the glory or fame.
He's runnin' for his life!

II
Shot fired and the race is on;
now he's on the run;
yeah he's just begun.

Detractors and well-wishers
stand on either side.
He must pay them no mind.

His mind is closed to everything that might
break his concentration.
His heart and soul are being fueled by
a holy motivation!

Don't want to end in disgrace!
He got to win this race!

III
He's not runnin' for the glory or fame, no
---he's runnin' for his life!
This ain't no mere game to him.
He's on the edge of a knife!

He's runnin' for his life!
He's running from the darkness
toward the Light!

Heart pounding...Legs grow weary...Short of breath now...

Faith... Hope... LOVE!

IV
He's found his second wind!
Now he's pressin' on,
---speeding up again.

Finish line lyin' up ahead;
can he keep up the pace?
Will he reach the end?

In this contest he got to rely upon,
much more than muscle and bone.
It takes a spirit burnin' white hot with
---the vision of his true home!

He's runnin' for his life!
He's runnin' from the darkness toward the Light!

Well, here it is again...
Yer working hard and I appreciate hard work. Yer ears are getting better, even at your age! A very rare thing indeed. Bravo! I got some polish somewhere I am going to send you...

Can use the polish!!!
Thanks for the props Daug. As the ears at MJ become more mature and discriminating I feel it ever more necessary to work harder at this craft, even if it is only a hobby.

It's getting better all the time...
No, not the song. Just my comment on your music. Another solid song from Calchas, who seems to never run out of inspiration and better & better music. Very good and fun rocker, Mike!

Not Calchas any more my friend...
but WYNDSOK! (Wish Simon would let me change the name on my page...) When I begin posting on YouTube (or anywhere else) it will be under my new name.

Getting better? Ha ha... what's the point of getting worse? Or, for that matter, staying the same... We must all work harder at our craft. We owe it to ourselves and our listeners.

Be well old friend!

Unusual topic
For a song, but one that I appreciate! I am not a runner like the one in the song, but I am kind of running for my life, i.e. to stay on top of the decay of the aging body :-/

I like the lyrics and the music fits nicely. The good work paid off, with a lot of fancy stuff going on, piano, guitars etc.. :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Hey Henrik!
The aging body is definitely a formidable hurdle for those of us nearing 70! (I'm 66 and know whereof I speak!)

Glad you appreciated the work that went into this. I spent about a month on it. A whole afternoon on the lyrics alone... DAYS on the mix.

Be well, and thanks as always!

As always Mike
A really involving piece of work.

Lots of great playing and a really interesting arrangement.

The piano flourishes work well.

Running for his life. Aren't we all these days?

Cheers

excellent Mike. first off the mix is superb. the guitars compliment each other quite nicely. classic rock in a Mott The Hoople style.

The Hoople again!
I'll have to listen to those guys some day so I can understand the comparison. Ha ha...

Anyway, I wanted to do an interesting, but fun and accessible rocker.

This was the result. Glad you liked it!

I like this Mike. It's a good song, well performed and recorded. It certainly kept me interested and impressed. You have definitely developed some new mixing skills recently.
I have a small nit (you knew I did, right?!) - the piano and lead guitar seem panned hard left and hard right. For me - and it's just a matter of personal taste - I reckon if you shifted both of them more in towards the centre, you'd have an even more cohesive sound. Apart from that, I love it!
Cheers from Oz,

Hi'ya Neil...
I think the mix diff comes down to this... You're thinking in terms of a band as they sound in a club or other smaller venue. I'm dealing with arena rock and the concept of a wide stage. Comes from years of Jethro Tull concerts I suppose! Nevertheless, I appreciate your input and intend to apply your insights on more acoustical or folky rock pieces.

Be well friend!
