Description
A bit of a departure for me in that this is not a personal experience but a song based on a story old musical buddy Steve told me of his first trip down to London as a 17 year old teenager. Back then Kings Cross station was a pretty grim place.

A vignette I guess. In open G tuning with capo on 3rd.
Originally a live guitar vocal single take and then overdubs added before passing it on to DWL for slide guitar, celeste, atmospherics and production. Another fun co production.

Lyrics
Kings Cross 74

Supping tea in an all night Wimpy
Kings Cross in 74
Missed the last train home
After the party
I didn’t wan to sleep on the floor

The bright lights of London
A young man’s awakening
Soho and Carnaby street
In awe of guitars
I look over my shoulder
And there’s the face of Greg Lake

Ch
No matter how the years turn
The memory burns

It’s one in the morning
I’m outside the Wimpy
It’s a dirty and dangerous place
An empty bench
I lie down in the station
Look up to see a friendly face

Where you off to son
The night guard asked me
as I sit curled up on the shelf
Get yourself on the mail train north now
He’s probably a father himself

No matter how the years turn
The memory burns

After the party
The production has ghostly features which might have enjoyed a bit more space in the arrangement?
The keyboards are genre perfect. The vocals are bright and engaging. Well done!

Mark, this takes me back - not to London, but to Mellor, near Stockport, where we lived and worked for a year in '86. A special year, made even more special on hearing "Life In A Northern Town" (Dream Academy) while we were there. Something in the atmosphere of Kings Cross 74 with DWL gives me the same feeling of warm nostalgic joy that I get listening to LIANT.
Memories .............
Cheers from Oz,

Pleasantly spooky
There was a place in Leeds called Terry's All Time which was somehow always open. It had a bad rep, but was actually quite fun. And you could walk home. Glad I didn't get stuck in King's Cross!

It came out well!
An interesting song to work on.

It sounds wonderfully personal even if it's not.

I'm pleased the bits of "atmosphere" worked.

Here's to the next one!

Cheers
