Marking Time

Description
I was warming up on my guitar in order to record one of several pieces I have waiting in the wings, when suddenly I found myself playing this chord progression instead.

I decided to follow my Muse!

Just more thoughts on the human condition.

Hope you like it!

:-)

BTW, there are nods to Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and two to Jethro Tull (one rather obvious and another one more subtle).

Can you pick them out?

Lyrics
MARKING TIME

I
Two old men sittin' on a park bench;
their jaws begin to wag.
They're tellin' jokes, and swappin' stories,
while drinking from a bag.

They're marking time.
They're feeling fine...

Something's comin' up around the bend.
They feel it in their bones.
But for now it's once more 'round the sun,
riding this old stone....

II
Young folk milling all around here;
they seldom see the sky.
Their eyes are fixed on their devices.
They really don't know why.

They're marking time.
Life's passing them by...

How will this surreal drama end?
Do any of them know?
We're “all along the watchtower” now;
just goin' with the flow...

Hey!

Bridge:
Looking back at human history;
---choices we make determine
each one of our destinies.

Selah...

III
I'm sitting reading from the Scriptures;
just looking for some light;
---asking Christ to heal my lameness;
restore my inner sight.

I'm marking time.
Been too long flying blind.

I need a heart of gold to go with
these sorry feet of clay;
---clearly see the path before me, and
get out of my own way!

Something's comin' up around the bend.
I feel it in my bones.
But for now it's once more 'round the sun,
riding this old stone...
home!

We're marking time...

We're marking time...

Follow or be lost
The Muse does not fool around, you were wise to make the project you were given. If only more people would discipline themselves and do the work required. Thanks for posting, the lyrics are genuine and come from the heart...

That ol' Muse!
After posting this I tried once more to work on that tune waiting in the wings. The same thing has happened again! So I'm busy working for my Muse again!

Thanks for the thumbs up!

Very, very nice..
much enjoyed.As my Dad once told me he knew a man who could do more than see into the past or future, but could, as he claimed, see into the present itself; that exact instant when the future plunges irretrievably into the past.

Alrighty then!
Here goes:

"[old men] sitting on a park bench" (Jethro Tull: "Aqualung")

End notes of recurring lead lick are quoted from Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun."

"This old stone" is an obscure reference to a line in Tull's "Old Ghosts" (from STORMWATCH. 1979): "down to the stone where the old ghosts play.:

Verbal reference to "All along the watchtower" is from Dylan obviously, and the lead solo is inspired by Hendrix's cover of that tune.

The "Heart of Gold" line is my nod to Neil Young.

There you have it... Thanks for listening!
