Description
When I was writing the songs for the Queen Caroline project Graeme (of Amokopera fame) sent me a song about how the binmen might feel about their new, wealthy customers.

It was handwritten and several pages long. It was accompanied by a cassette (yes, it was a while back) of the entire song unaccompanied that he did in one take! I started to work on it but there was no real verse/chorus/bridge structure and I was struggling to put anything together. I had a great first verse but didn't know what else to do with it.

Over the years I'd revisit it and do another section. This year I decided I was going to finish it and amazingly I managed it. It was written and recorded in several sections over 7 years so if it seems a little disjointed sonically it's because the only thing I re-recorded was the vocals.

Anyway, I've had to give up on a mix as my monitors have given up on me. Despite them having a 3 year warranty, and me having the receipts to prove they are less than 3 years old, Behringer refuse to repair/replace them as I didn't register them when I first bought them (I didn't know I had to). Really poor response from them and I wouldn't recommend them.

So mixed on headphones and I have no real idea if it's Ok ( I feel the bass is rumbling and too loud maybe?)

Lyrics and melody : Graeme Hobbs

Music, arrangement and vocals: me

Here is a version you can play on an iPhone or iPad and doesn't need Flash A Binman's Conscience March

FWIW I've broken my own record. The longest it's taken me to finish a collab was 6 years, this one is over 7!

Lyrics
A Binman's Conscience March © Graeme Hobbs April 2012

Somehow the dirt just seems cleaner
It could never make you itch
And the grass will be much greener
When we get those Christmas tips
I'm sure we'll all be smiling
We'll be simply thrilled to bits
And life will be much sweeter
As a binman for the rich

I've been dreaming, always dreaming
Of when a better class of rubbish comes my way
I've been dreaming, always dreaming
It's the kinda dream that never goes away

They will simply break its heart and tear its soul apart
All the people and their homes will disappear
And the memories will fade
But some will take them to their grave
Of all the life and all its stories that were here

I've been dreaming, always dreaming
Of when a better class of rubbish comes my way
I've been dreaming, always dreaming
It's the kinda price that seems too hard to pay

To the bin of time we're bound, back on the cart, back on the round
Can I keep my binman's conscience squeaky clean?
Did mum and dad survive the blitz to beaten by these shits
Can I hope to keep my binman's conscience clean?

Give a smile, give a grin, you can whistle, drop a bin
Make a racket for the things you know are right
Don't go meekly to your maker, go on shake your money maker
In life there's times you've got to stand and fight

Hooray! God save the Queen! Well whatever that may mean
It's part and parcel of what makes us who we are
There's gold in them thar hills, but it gives me such cold chills
As they laugh at us and greed fills up their heart

Dreaming, they've been dreaming
To own everything beneath the grey blue sky
They've been dreaming, yes they've been dreaming
They'd like us all to bugger off and die

With their urban travesty they're wanting my complicity
Discommunity, monopoly , it stinks
I think they may have got it wrong
That they can buy me for a song
My principles are worth more than they think

Now things are getting grimy, the speculators slimy
Can I keep my binman's conscience squeaky clean?
If I thought that we could win
I'd bash their heads in with a bin
And I'd safely keep my binman's conscience clean

Love the rumbly bass and the kicky drums - this veritably leaps out of the speakers, and I love it!
I mix on 'phones, and maybe that's why I get such a big sound - like this.
Ian Dury, Ian Anderson and Ray Davies come to mind from a lyrical and vocal point of view.
Excellent stuff!! Have crossed Behringer speakers off my list - oh, wait, they were never there ;)
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Thanks Neil
Ian Dury and Ray Davies are both favourites of mine and Graeme (who wrote the lyrics) so I'm happy with that.

I often struggle finding the right drums in Logic but the Solid 70s drums worked a treat on this.

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Cheers

Wow!
Excellent lyrics... Thumpin' bass, and dem horns are WILD and WOOLY!

As for the theme: Re-read Chesterton and Belloc and the new Distributists. Away with Capitalism (Big Business) and Socialism (Big Government), neither of which are in the best interests of the working class and their beleagured families.

LOVE this one Dick!

Very Brit, to the point I lose a lot in the lyric. This seems to me not unlike The Village Green? Probably the thing in my listening experience that comes closest is the Ray Davies' Brit world view. I am certain I am not alone on that, MJs has becomes very Brit and I should try to get what yer putting down to be a good townie lol.
I would suggest adding low/upper mid frequencies to the lead vocal track. Probably not your intention but the tone is borderline comical. Or am I missing an "in" joke?
Seven years? I can't remember seven years ago... Dig the bass and the horn chart, top work!

Nothing exceptional is being said that hasn't been said many times before. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

The next time I fire up the music computer I'll try the adjusting the EQ on the vox. Thanks. Borderline comical is about right. It's a throwback to early musical hall when a lot of performers would sing in a natural accent that reflected their audience. I only realised after many years that I could be more effective by using my Essex accent (c/w Ian Dury).

Ray Davies used the same type of delivery but his was a little more refined. The Village Green album remains a very underrated piece of work. Tremendous vision.

Thanks for the comments about bass and horns. The bass was done at 4 separate times over the years and, sad to say, it's still got the same strings as it had 7 years ago...

The horns were a mixture of Logic loops and original writing.

Thanks for the listen and comments
